My 1972 bay camper has had the generator light on and flattened the battery, can anyone point me in the direction of some step by step advice on how to find out what is wrong and fix it?

I'm no mechanic by anyone's standards but I'm keen to give it a go!

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Jonny

Youve answered your own question.

If your Gen light is on then your Gen is not charging your battery. Im affraid you either need to change the brushes in the Gen, buy a new gen, or better still get and Alternator.
(Ive got one for sale cheap in the for sale section ;) )

I had the same issue with mine.

I upgraded to an alternator and I've never looked back.

Most of the big spares suppliers do alternator conversion bundle kits.

:D

I had the same prob, start with changing the brushes, but more than likely the regulator will be cooked, get one from Just Kampers and will need a small wiring change, but should cure the prob without spending £££s

Nice one guys, thanks for the help and advice!

Gonna get a voltmeter on it to check for wiring issues as a first port of call but Alternator sounds like a good option.

Finally stuck some pictures of the bus online, last few show the generator: http://picasaweb.google.com/113531638545159389566/Heap#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Its more common for the regulator to fail than the dynamo. Regulator is cheap and easy to replace.

Go to Speedy Jims handy website http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/elec.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and do the tests to check your bus.
