Hi Steve,
I wanted to reach back out and give you some info on the bushings that I have found in the last few days. As I said before, I have one on my own 69 bay which I installed when the parts first came out a few months back. As I said, I was able to get the bushing to lock in, although it was a tight fit. I had to use some channel locks to lock it into position. I also have a local customer with a 70 Bay who installed his without much trouble and it's working well. Yesterday I spoke with another customer of mine from out of state who ran into the issue you are talking about and the bushing came up short. He remedied the issue by smoothing the casting of the shift rod where the bushing locks in, and then the bushing locked in just fine.
Following that conversation I rounded up a few original shift rods I have here and noticed that there are variances in the crown where the busing sits. Some were smooth and I was able to get the bushing into place and others were more rough castings and it would not snap in. On those a quick pass with a smoothing disc on a grinder would give it enough room to snap in. The bummer is that as we all know, the original bushings are junk, the aftermarket ones like the one you sent which I believe is from Custom and Commercial is also not great, and the same is true for the Wolfsburg West one we have here in the states. They just fit sloppy and I believe they were made "longer" to accommodate the variances in the original shift rods. A sort of 1 size fits all approach. I know not everyone is happy to have to modify the stock shift rods to run this delrin Bushing but I can tell you, from my experience it is worth it. Again, I did not have to modify my shift rod to run it but as the fix is a simple one, I would definitely do it to run the bushing on my own bus in a heartbeat. You really can't beat the improvement in feel and directness of the shifter it provides.
That being said, I have decided that in this case the best course of action is to issue a refund to Mike Gardner who was the original purchaser of the bushings. I can only refund what was spent which was 684 Pounds for parts and shipping. I am not able to refund any additional funds for taxes etc, sorry. You guys can keep the bushings and install them if you like by smoothing the shift rod crown, ( I have included a photo of one that has had this done and bushing installed for reference) No need to send me back anything, we can chalk this up to a learning experience all around. I'm not sure if you have heard from Brian Washnburn yet or not but from the research I have done myself over the last few days I believe this is the best way forward. I will credit Mike this afternoon and you guys can disburse the funds out from there.
Thanks,
Jason Reich
