The central pipe under the van that carries the heat to the front is a replacement metal pipe, new straight exhaust pipe actually. The heating works like a small child breathing on you, so  the pipe needs lagging to keep the heat, hot. What does anyone recommend, obviously it will get wet so needs to be good for that.

Cheers Andrew.

wrapped mine in that silver foil bubble wrap stuff that you see thermal windscreen covers made from , got it from BNQ FOR £4.99 a roll , i used foil tape to secure it .

mine was done by the PO. works well. not sure what it's made off.

Hey Marcher,

That looks good. Would regular pipe insulation foam work? Is that what yours is?

I don't remember having a baffled pipe like in the engine compartment for the heater up front, do you have a fan up there?

Cheers

Hey Andrew, just a thought, if the tube for the walk through vent is missing, that could be where all you hot air is going!?

Mine was open and I've just blocked it off at the moment while I work out where to buy one from.

Just a thought.

Mike

Good thinking about the foam. Tube is missing so I blocked off and made massive improvement. Will see what I can get! Will let you know!

I'm planning to go for something like this :

http://www.insulationandlagging.co.uk/Pipe-Insulation/30mm-Thick-Kooltherm-Phenolic-Pipe-Insulation" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

it's phenolic foam so shouldn't hold water, and i imagine there will be a minimum order so i need to check. Also, not sure if 30mm will be too thick but there are thinner options. Bascially a job i plan to do over Christmas with a mate but i've got a bit of checking to do first, but i thought i'd share my research. I'm pretty sure the diameter of the pipe is 70mm so will probably go over size and trim back as best i can..

I hoping i can get one of our plumbers we work with to do me a christmas favour.....

Hi Matt,

That looks just the right stuff! let us know which one works and how it works/difference.

I have a walk through should i have a hole for the pipe there as well?

Cheers

You should have the extra pipe if your van a walk through.

Never had a van with that lagging before, it really works "too" well really. The van gets to hot in the middle of the coldest weather that i had to leave the windows open on the way to Ninove last year :D :D :D :D :D

Just checking if anyone had had any further ideas for the lagging? Want to make sure it is safe.

I've noticed I have the extra pipe underneath which should go to the walk through bit. Mines got a flap with a wire to it but whichever heater control ( the front two and the knob under the drivers seat) I move nothing moves the flap, does anyone know which one works it?
Also where does the pipe go from that main heater pipe, I can't see where it feeds into the walk through vents?

Thanks

That small tube was dead on mine so I taped it up temp with duck tape. Still need to insulate the main pipe to get more heat through! 2 oC driving through Chatsworth yesterday inside the van!

Could fit a "pull fan" up front mate to , draw the heat forward towards the front ,ive got one on mine by previous owner which is a welcome addition along with overhauling the standard system.

Cool, nice find. Looks like the sort of thing I need too. I think 30mm may be too thick though to fit between top of pipe and floor. I'll measure mine later and check.

Typically, i didn't get on to this over christmas but had a great time anyway. If you find anything out post it up. A spring job now methinks,

I took a look under the van this morning (got an inspection pit so slightly easier). I replaced most of the length of my heater pipe and the new pipe is 70mm diameter. The bit of old pipe I welded on to though was a bit wider at 72mm.

As far as clearance up top is concerned, there are a few pipes (handbrake/heater cable pipes) that cross over the top of the main heater pipe so you can't wrap anything around it 100%, but a few cuts here and there in the insulation should mean it gets to cover most areas. There is, at most, around 25mm gap between heater pipe and floor so 30mm insulation would be too thick.

I did forget to measure the length of the pipe though...it was getting a bit cold below ground. I'll see if I can get down there again later.
