Hi Steve from South Wales here.

Maybe a midlife crisis but I have developed an urge to get myself a VW Camper, probably an early bay.

I can live with LHD if needs be but want a good solid rust free van that is ready to go.

What can I expect to pay, where is the best place to look (don't fancy ebay) and who should I avoid.

I'm not going to rush into it as I want to learn as much as I can before I buy.

Can anyone help please?

Cheers

Steve

buying an earlybay will leave you skint, dirty, oily and bloody......but its well worth it  i think the best place to look for one is the for sale section on sites lke this or prehaps have a look at shows where you can actuly have a good nose round lots of vans. Have a good read through the threads on here on types of vans and all the camping interiors so you learn exactly what you want and you will have a bus that suits your lifestyle, and learn where to check for rust, there are a few places that most bays like to rot, happy camper hunting!

Think hard about a budget

Think about what exactly you want

Camper conversion?

Microbus (VWs work of art)

Single / Double cab

Kombi

Panel van

Wether your happy to use drive away awnings for camping in or tents or wish to literally have a full on camper everything in one small package

Think about how useful you are with a toolkit

Speak with Scott Wilson on here for RHD imports, MEB (or individually Graham L and Gadget boy), Volksheaven in Doncaster, FBI in Wales, K'n'K as advertised on the banners

meet some of the folks on here they all like to meet up and perv over busses and show theres off...

WHS :D

Where abouts in S wales are you? It may be worth a trip to FBI Swansea to set a baseline and then talk to Scott Wilson, Graham L, Simon Hall and the others on here selling. There are some amazing buses for sale at the moment and depending on your budgt and requirements there is bound to be a bus out there for you.

Thank you for your comments so far.

I am in Newport so Swansea only 45 minutes away.

Think I would prefer a camper conversion where I dont have to worry about tents although not adverse to an awning.

Not very mechanically minded so not looking for a project, looking to benefit from someone elses hard work I guess.

Benefit away from all the work I spent on this bus, not to mention less than 500 miles on fully rebuilt 2.0 engine and a complete westfalia interior in great shape.

Not an earlybay but I think it fits your needs.
Cheers.

'tis but true, only very special buses tempt me to sell mine. Maybe one day. I really want to restore it before I sell it, but for the right price I would let it go and buy my self one of two cool buses I have seen lately........RHD earlies ;)

Just offering to meet up as Wensbry lives in Newport too. 8)
