Went for run out yesterday and had the following problem....When I came to a junction or roundabout and slowed down the engine spluttered and died. This happened on a couple of occasions. The thing seems to run well when crusing along but when the revs drop and I hit the excellerator it cuts out....Any ideas????

Should have mentioned am running a 1600TP standard set up and problem started when the engine was hot (starts first time from cold but can be difficult to start when hot)

The Hot start seems to be normal, I did know why it happened but it seems to of escape me :D

When was the last time you had a service, I would say your engine is flooding with petrol.
If it was me I would check the plugs to see if they are clean I had the same issue and I was running way too rich and my plugs where black, also my valve clearances where way out.

Hello Shaggy

Serviced about 2000 miles ago.....Will get my self a plug spanner and have a look...Cheers
Any other thoughts???

I am not to hot on the old engine thing, so I can only go my what has happened to me, do you have a vac advanced dizzy?

I,ve no idea.....dont even know what that is  . As you can tell Im not too hot on the old engine thing either :D :D :D

Ok well, lets put it this way there are two types of dizzy you can use a 009 or a vac dizzy, now the 009 is good to be used as high revs but not very good at low revs the vac dizzy is a very good all rounder great for driving.

So what that means is the 009 is hard to set up to get you engine running at low revs so what can happen is you when you take you foot of the pedal and pull up to some light the revs can just drop of and the engine cut out.

Now what they look like, the Vac dizzy has a big disc on the side a bit like a UFO :D the 009 does not.

This is a very basic explanation.

But that is not to say that you can't get the 009 to run well, I just ran the carb a little richer and that seem to do well, but not ideal. I am in the process of changing mine.

Thanks for the explaination Shaggy...Definately got 009...this was fitted 9 months ago along with a new fuel pump. My thoughts are perhaps carb is knackered because when the 009 and fuel pump were fitted the mechanic said he had adjusted the carb "as much as he could" what do you think?

Might be an air leak at the carb or inlet manifold as well. Makes no difference at higher revs, but when they drop the mixture becomes too weak and the engine dies. Try tightening the carb and manifiold bolts.

I would say what the above said, I think most people that have had a 009 have had the same issue. I think it could be as easy as setting the carb up, it could be warn, but that doesn't always mean a new carb you can get a refurb kit from GSF for about £9 just did mine, really easy.

As its a TP take a look at the rubber gaiters on the manifold they may well be punctured.. cost peanuts and a 15 min job....Its amazing how well the motor can function even with great tears in them sayin that....but at the low revs the air drawn in will make life hard....

the hot start issue I think Shaggies refering too is the actual starting cct where the starter/solenoid wont engage/turn when the engines hot due to the current loss through the cabling/ignition switch on a bus....

Check the usual **** points, timing, tappets, and if hes saying that the carb was the best hecould get it try doing what shaggies doing and get a refurb kit and clean/ refurb the carb....if the jets have wear or are ******* up your gonna experience probs...has your fuel (I would say costs but under present circumstances  ) usage gone up noticeably?

I wouldn't worry too much dude, They do say touch the carb last, check everything else first.

One cause would be incorrectly set tappets too small a gap or no gap is also common on a hot engine, but pretty much all the above will give you high fuel consumption more likely as a result of you feeding more fuel that aint burning....
