Hey guys,

I need help - I have been trying to put the windows back in the van but they dont seem to fit. Ive bought the rubbers from megabug so I know they are the right ones but the f*ckers wont go in! Me, my dad, my brother, my cousin, an RAC man (who said he specialised in classic cars) and a bloke who works in a garage have tried and we cant get them in.

Does anyone know how to do it or can anyone put them in????

Oh would help if i told you what windows are the problem - its the middle drivers side, the sliding door and the rear passenger side

Check they are the right ones. Panel van conversion rubbers are different from camper van rubbers.

Hey buddy,,,,,,,,, I thought I could do just about anything but those windows got the better of me. My mate had a pop as well and he`s allready put other glass in before (not VW), it sorted us both out.. Got a friend of a friend who used to be a window fitter to pop them in for me and although he hadn`t done ancient VW`s before, a few tricks and a few slapping , pushing, banging, swearing moments later and they were in. He put the rubbers on the glass and got a spray / mister off my missus with some water and fairys in it and he used that loads, he did the rope in the rubber thing, a lot thicker than I thought it would be and he used a mastic nozzle (cut down a bit) to get the rope in first, not quite as thick as sash cord. He sort of directed us where to slap it and where to put pressure on the glass and he sat there smoking a fag and wiggling his bit of string. Can`t all be great at everything. 8) 8) Get a pro from somewhere  :? You`ll be glad you did :D :) :D

Ozziedog,,, Ass whooped by the glass

Get a pro in... Got the better of me and a mate who`d done a bit before. Friend of a friend used to do it and made em plop in with a bit of fairy spray and three of us pushing and slapping etc. String was thicker than I thought it would be, not quite as thick as sash cord. He put the rubber on the glass then stuck the rope in the rubber useing a cut off mastic nozzle. He sat in the bus directing us where to push slap etc and made it look stupidly easy 8) 8) 8) Pay some dosh and get a pro in and there will be a lot less lost blood in the process. :?

Ozziedog Ass whooped (me) by a bit of glass

Please don't use washing up liquid - it contains salt :?

It's not always easy, and is seal quality dependent, but worth mastering :)

Hi Clem, I`ve heard that elsewhere as well. I was in a position at nine o`clock at night when this knight in shining armour turns up and pops the glass in for me. He asked for fairy and a mister / sprayer and he got it. He could of had my missus as well so long as he got the glass in.   There probably is a proffesional type of spray lubricant that they use, but sometimes you need to play the cards you`re dealt. Now that you`ve mentioned it and jogged my memory, it might be a good idea to have a little clean out round them rubbers of mine. Hope it`s not like cleaning the cheese cabinet.

Ozziedog,,,,, ;)

Hey guys,

thanks for the advice, I bought one set of rubbers from Just Kampers and they was too big so then went to mega bug and got the same rubbers as the originals. It looks like you have all had the same trouble so Im gonna have to keep going with it and might have them in by Christmas!!!

Will keep on the hunt for a pro too - if anyone is one PM me!

:D :D

I had a junk mail/mail shot from Just Kampers the other day and it mentioned there a difference between pre and post 73 window rubbers ... Ive never heard of it before but who knows?

Ozzie - I understand how it must have been, but some car shampoo/wash n wax would have been as 'slippy' without the salt. KY Jelly is reccomended also ;) Like you say though, try and wash out what you can.

I always use Waxoil to slip the window in, park my bus parallel with a wall approx 1 meter away, get be back on the wall & with the aid of step ladders get both feet on the window (shoes on & a rag between shoes & window) plenty on leverage then whilst me dad sits inside the van pulling the seal round..Job done :D
