Help under dash!

So I'm under the dash sussing it all out, I see a Y shaped pipe I presume is heat, one side has a fitting on it to the under side of dash but its taped. Other side has nothing? What is it please?

It's difficult to visualise things from your description.

It might be part of the ventilation system, leading to a large plenum behind the kick-boards and thence to the front-panel grille.

It might be part of an air-conditioning system, whose air-vents are mounted into a supplementary panel, fastened to the underside of the dashboard.

That looks as though it might be a 1968~72 VW Type 2, heater windscreen-demister vent duct, leading to the underside of the dashboard top.
