Hi to all early bay lovers.
My names Tim.
I'm 46 (he says quietly..)
I've been into dubs since I was a young kid.
My brother is a mechanic and he was always fixing his best mates beetles when I grew up.
He hated them i loved them,i loved there quirkiness.
I became a panel beater at 16.
But i never got my first bug until i was 19
I've had several beetles over the years since and i have restored many too.
I have had several bay windows from '74 on,including a really cool sheldon high topped Viking.
My first but got stolen whilst on a trip to Blackpool, which destroyed me..
My last bus however was a 64 split in Turkish green.
A cali import with OG paint.
My personal life went against me however and my bus had to go
I have never had an early bay until last year.
And it was the one I always wanted.
It's a '69 devonette.
it has seats behind the driver and passenger so it's a six seater.handy for the kids.
It's had a huge amount of work done by a previous owner.
Including all the major lower panels.Australian sourced doors, including slider.
The work has been done to a very good standard and I am happy to leave it as it is.
It is remarkably in good condition otherwise.Roof gutters etc
Under the ssp sprintstars you will find it's got CSP discs up front.
It has a recon 1776 motor, full flow oil system with remote cooler.
It has twin carbs and a fatboy/mondo exhaust.
A lite steer power steering set up.
Standard gearbox and rear drums.
I have also done a lot of work on it.
I hadn't had it that long when an oil hose going to the filter head burst.
I had a proper look to see how all the pipes ran etc
It all looked untidy and it wasn't the best..
I decided to pull all the complete oil system off and start again.
Looking through the mass of bills I got with the bus..
it had had the engine done, and then sometime later the remote oil job was carried out.
I soon discovered that all the remote oil fittings which where on it had been pulled off another vehicle.
And these had been fitted to recently brand new recon motor, which had done less than 3500 miles.
I looked into several setups and finally fitted a maxiflo3 oil pump and cover..
I had to modify the rear engine support bar to aid clearance.
As it was previously full flowed I had to blank off the return for the oil.
This is because the maxi flow 3 has an exit and return in the cover.
I then replaced and re- rooted the pipes and made several brackets to keep the pipes safely away from the exhaust.
I used rubber sleeved p clips to hold the pipes just where i wanted them.
Once I got it all back up and running again,I decided to fit an oil temp and pressure gauges.
This was time consuming as I wanted to do it properly.
The motor has a universal case so I was able to use the blanking plate( where a type 3 oil filler tube fits) to drill and tap for my temp sender
I removed all internal interia fittings to run all my cables throughout to the dash
This works well...
I've fitted a proper auxiliary battery regulator, sorted out all the bad spade connectors going to the fuse box.
I've also fitted a second fuse box which is for the auxiliary battery and included two additional cigarette sockets.
One in the rear and one up near the cab.
I drilled into the top left corner of the engine bay and also inside the interior cupboard (there's like a blank space or void between the two) this enabled me to slide a steel pipe inside.Which is now used to run the cables through, once i found a suitable rubber tube to protect them all in.
These are really handy.
I fitted the roof rack and the NOS Raydyot DL,plus i have since replaced the rear lense with chrome edged ones.
Future jobs will include the super necessary fire extinguisher.
I have just bought a tow bar from autocraft and I am deciding on whether to have a vintage speed exhaust.
It has a skat quickshift stick on at present but i am considering a csp one as i have heard good reports about them.
I hope you all like it.
Thanks Tim
