how bad

my engine .took the rocker cover off to sort out the tappets and the push rods werent in the part that they are ment to sit.
how bad could this be it still starts and runs
can i just put it back as it should be or is this bad :? :?

Not enough info or pics to make a call, sounds like its gonna be a judgement of your own, get it clear in your mind why its / they arent where they should be check for wear and condition rockers and rods, was it assembled that way or is there another issue ie bent rods excessive wear etc.....

Are you saying that the pushrods weren't moving the rocker arms?
If that is the case then it cant have been running very well, As Araon said put up some pics or more detail, something sounds seriously wrong.
