How to clean an early oil bath filter ?

OK peeps,
Just got hold of a cable operated oil bath air filter and want to give it a
clean before I install it. Do you think it will be ok to just give it a bath
of petrol to clean out the gauze in the main filter section? Or is there a
way of separating the two halves of the upper filter peice so you can wash the
gauze ?

Petrol, White spirit, anything like that will be good.

Don't suppose you have an early oil bath filter on your dub do you?
If so do you still have the red instructional writing on the side of it?
Half of mines rubbed off and I wanted to re-ink it in
