You all have radio`s...

mines never had one ,still has the original blanking plate ,82,000 miles of silence... :D

Must admit i turn mine off if i'm doing anything over 45mph for a length of time. No matter how good your system is it just gets drowned out by the raaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh of the engine and whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo of the wind

Not meaning to hi-jack the thread, but I have a Sony CDX-GT50UI (no, the model number means nothing to me either) bought used from a mate nearly new a year ago and still in the box. USB on the front, lead for IPOD to sit in glovebox etc etc. 52w x 4 says the spec, which doesn't sound much compared to the 400w plus others have mentioned. Ignorant I know, but surely 4 lots of 52w should produce plenty of sound? The standard fitment Phillips unit in my old Pug didn't have a big aux amp and sounded bloody great. My BOSE soundock doesn't have a big amp or big speakers (it's tiny!) but sounds absolutely fantastic at any volume, I've yet to make it distort! Am I missing the point here a bit about what makes a good sound system? I can tell the difference between what sounds good and what doesn't, just thick as ...... about how to get it. Used the soundock at Stanford Hall via an inverter on the leisure battery, worked well but want a good sounding permanent installation without spending any money (!) and having loads of amps and speakers everywhere.

I've got a Pioneer ipod compatible head unit with some cheap fli's in the front..

...and some Kenwood's in the back.

It sounds good enough for me without spending too much.

You tried sound deadening and insulation? Makes all the difference!

People often mistake quality sound for loudness. They are two very different things. The problem in an old aircooled van will be the amount of road noise and rattles etc. In most cars I would say that a good quality head unit, a set of quality components well placed and a small amp and small sub correctly fitted with well placed sound deadening would sound better than a lot of household stereo's. But as I said a van is very different and has many uses. If you listen mostly when static, driving, sat in the front, sat in rear you will think about an install to suit. Most head units give out 4 x 35 to 4 x 55 watts and this is enough to run 4 speakers and loud enough to annoy the neighbours.

It is important to direct the sound where you want it and block out as much unwanted sound ( ie road noise, rattles etc) as possible.

Dynamat on rattly panels and insulation on noisy areas will help noise reduction and dynamat behind speakers ensures sound goes in one direction. An easy set up for general use would be 2 way 6x9 speakers in the rear placed in a void (ie under bed) to produce bass and mid range. Then a set of mids and tweeters in the front to give additional mid range and trebble. Believe me £500 well spent and good fitting this can sound amazing. £150 head unit, £100 mids and tweeters, £100 6x9's and £150 on speakercable and sound deadening.
If anyone wants me to source and fit or just wants advice over and above this just ask.
Jon
