right here goes.......
Got her out today and started up no problem and went for a spin (well it was dry and the sun was peeping through, as if an excuse is needed !!!)
But, after about 10 miles suddenly just stalled, red light on so thought the worst.

Had a mooch in the engine and nothing jumped out so tried turning her over, fired up again all fine for another couple of miles and then same thing again !!!
Engine was sounding fine and I noticed that when i tried to start it again, every time i turned the ignition and then released the key the engine died, but if I hold the key all the way round the engine runs.

So i'm assuming the ignition barrel is knackered but could it be something else, excuse my ignornace on this one !!!!

Fuel starvation? Is the fuel pump delivering sufficient fuel to keep the engine running. Needle Valve on the Carb may be sticking. Couple of things might be worth checking?

From what you have described, I`d be thinking maybe condenser or points closed up, but I can see where A.B. is coming from and I am starting to think maybe fuel pump or fuel starvation. Pop the fuel pipe off the carb and plonk it in a sideways 1 to 1.5 waterbottle and crank it and see how far the juice shoots through the bottle, it should bounce off the back of the bottle. That will tell you if you is getting juice to the carb, if this is good but it could still be a fuel problem, drop about a half a capfull from the waterbottle into the carb / carbs, if you got good resultsfrom this for a few seconds, you can then go on to carb itself like mr A.B. says above.

I don`t know how the other guys do it, but mostly I just guess  Sometimes it`s a good guess ;) And sometimes it`s a ***** guess ;) And sometimes the original post is slightly wide of what is actually happening also  But not in this case. Well it sounds like it wants to run,,,,,, it was running,,,,,, the fuel does tend to evaporate leaving **** behind when not being used,,, and fuel pumps don`t like not being used either,,,,, This is just some of the things that have happened to me at one time or another  When you`ve been stuck somewhere for a while,, it sometimes gets etched in your brain

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, So ,,,, where`s the smart money then ??

Cheers guys, will have a mooch again at the carb tomorrow.
Just seemed strange that if I hold the key at the furthest point it seemed to run ok with no stuttering or popping.

I think,, why I`m guessing fuel,, is that the engine is running but with the assistance of the starter running also,, drop the starter and your motor stops. If it`s ignition, I`d be tempted to hot wire the coil just to try that as well.

It's the ignition barrel, had the same thing happen to me.
The contacts have worn inside and won't make the circuit, you end up having to over turn the key.
Don't turn too hard and snap the key though.....
