Hi, didn't want to hijack Sharky71 post on ignition barrell, some great postings in reply detailing how to replace which have motivated me to tackle my problem, but now hoping someone can advise which bits I'm like likely to need to do....

My ignition switch failed, in that turning the key didn't turn the starter motor, so took the easy way out in putting an additional push starter switch to bypass the switch. All worked well for a while, now when I turn the key and the oil, gen lights come on, it doesn't hold position, and hence turns the engine off. I've been taking to having a stash of tie wraps that strategically placed and ratcheted up stop the key turning back..... but feel that probably now the time to make good. Question is is my problem likely to be the ignition barrel, or the switch or other component?

My van is a 1972 crossover bay...

That sounds definitely like the switch to me matey. The switch has three positions, to turn off the steering lock, ignition on and then it's on a kind of spring back to initiate the starter motor. I hope that makes sense? I found the actual barrel does very little other than security obviously, it's the switch that does all the work. You'll see exactly what I mean when you dismantle it all. :D

ok, thank you for quick answers..... the switch bit I'll get on order then.... just been on vwheritage, £30..... and then guess I'll have to butcher it.... 7 wires..... how can any ignition switch need 7 wires?!

I got mine from cool air, £25 and free delivery

cos its to fit US busses ,one of them works the key in buzzer and is live when key is in but not turned on.and then later ones feed headlamps ,black and yellow wire.I would think about fitting relays to take load of switch cos on my 3rd and thats starting to stick in starter position.

thread hijack sorry

do you mean the starter relay mod or further relays to do other ccts too? my 68 doesn't have the buzzer wire - mind you it looks butchered and it is a job I had been putting off - as ours doesn't auto return on starting......

the suppliers will be baffled - 'how odd had a rush on starter switches...'

bet my 68 os a bloody one year only part too....

right back at ya jumping on your thread.......
got me switch on order from machine7.
so these wires coming from the switch...........how do i know which cable is which :?: (us import and new wires probably will not be same colour  )

:poke:

67Panel - do you mean using the ignition live for starting to switch a relay.... hey, I'm learning here, I guess from what you are saying that the whole electrical load for turning the starter motor goes through this little plastic switch bit..... if so can understand better to go through a relay! What load does a starter take.... Hence what size relay requird for this?

Did you mark the wires up before removing your old one? If you look at the switch there are numbers on each wire at the housing. 15,30,50 & new ones have a P.

I believe the P wire is either for the buzzer 67panel mentioned or the interior lights sensors on the doors. Not sure. Either way I didn't need P so I taped it up.

The ignition switch is D on this diagram. 3 wires.

On this later wiring diagram there's a 4th wire that goes to the door pillar switch for the cab light. Do you have one?

These were sent to me by Zed, I found them useful.

red batt live either feed from light switch or fuse box depends on year,red/black starter, black ign feed to fuse box,black/yellow to light switch feed to headlights(72 >) grey buzzer. relay for starter as per hot start 40amp ,relay for ign feed would feed fuse box 30amp depends on how many extras coming of ign fuse .would fit one in engine bay ign fed to feed coil from battery to lessen volt drop .if you want to be flash you can get solid state relays :msn4: I can make a relay board to fit above batt if anyone is interested.
