My bus came with a dreaded 009, which I think has some play in it and now I want to upgrade.
I'm looking at either a 123 or Aircooled.net SVDA, has anyone any experience using either?
What kind of improvements in running can I expect?

I'm also considering the 123....very interesting info on previous thread

Anything is better than points and 009 though, right?

Take a look at this -

Use the SVDA dissy, it is what VW used. I've fitted one to our '68 Westy with twin Dellorto FRD 34's with absolutely no problems. It returns 28mpg around here (Cornwall) and 32mpg on a run. The engine is a stock apart from the 1641 barrels and pistons. I've also recently returned a friends Bug to stock, having removed the dreaded 009, Pertonix and a pair of Kadrons. It too is a 1641 compliments of Remtec and now starts and run as it should with good economy. More than it did with the 009 etc.

The trouble with the 009 is the advance curve is not quite right, even though it is supposed to be a replacement, and they are cheap copies made in Brazil. Original german ones are ok but often need a rebuild to be any good. but only any good with twin carbs where you have no vaccum pipes to draw in air.

Just get a second hand stock german dissy and fit electronic to that if you want to ditch the points.
