importing from Austria - anyone done it???

I want to buy a mk1 golf and a early bay pick up from austria - but whats the deal with tax mot out there - it doesn't seem they have road tax or mot like we do - just wondering what happens when you try crossing borders eg - into germany etc on way back to UK.

have searched google but only can find importing vehicle intop austria from uk and not the opposite way round

our bus came from Austria, basically the owner bought us a 'green' plate for exporting.
It is a green number plate that the seller can purchase on your behalf at the post office...it is like an mot and insurance rolled into one....I think you get a week or so's insurance enabling you to drive it through europe...it has a date stamp on it [ we also insured it with our brokers...phoning in the green plate number and chassis number once we were there]
drove back from Austria to surrey without problem
