I have a 71 westy and am pretty sure the Indicator should automaticly switch off once i have finished my turn, is this true?

If so has anybody had this problem and know how to remedy it?

Thanks Fred

Do you have a repro indicator arm? some of them dont have the cancelling feature ;) or it could be a case of that bit is broken on yours, take it apart and have a looksy 8)

I believe it should do particularly as it is part of the MOT.

Didnt know that? i know loads of cars and i mean loads that have indicators that dont cancel :?:

Hiya fred,

The underside of the steering wheel has a cam (or dog) attached which, when the wheel is turned, trips the switch back to an unswitched position. It is very common for people to take off the steering wheel and reinstall it without regard to this cam's position. If it is not installed correctly the turn signal switch will not self cancel.

Oh, and one other thing............the spacing between the bottom of the steering wheel and the top of the turn signal switch must be just so. Check your Bentley or Haynes for specs.

No, it isn't. Indicators not self canceling are not in any way a part of the MOT test, as long as the switch does not cancel when it isn't meant to it will be fine.

Our modern car (Ford focus) doesn't have cancelling indicators any more (think something broke) and its never failed an MOT because of it. They dont drive cars as part of an MOT so they will never know if it cancels or not, all they need to know is that the indicator works

Hiya Fred,
I have a similar problem with my indicators, only cancels one way and not the other, i have taken the switch out and from what I can see, there is a spring missing and the holders for the spring have snapped off (plastic), as I operate the switch, going one way the plastic tab moves out and will cancel, the other the tab does not move so will not cancel. As i took the unit out a small badly deformed spring fell out, looked like it had been rattling around the mechanism for some time. I seem to think that someone has done a rebuild on here with pictures somewhere, but I can't find it now.
Cheers
Mark

Paying attention to the possibilities raised by Mark just above may prove beneficial also.

Insofar as the steering wheel cam goes................the only way to remedy that particular situation is to remove the steering wheel and reinstall it. The cam itself is secured in place by three screws and it may be moved around a bit but you'll need to reposition the steering wheel. IIRC, The "tooth" of the cam should be positioned so that it sits on the same side of the center hub as the turn signal switch.

When you pull off your steering wheel pay particular attention to where that cam is presently located. If you see it on the opposite side of the hub (from the turn signal switch) you will know very quickly what your problem is. If, however, it sits on the same side of the center hub you will need to look for the sort of issues raised by Mark or examine the spacing between the steering wheel hub and the rest of the steering column assembly (turn signal switch) that I mentioned in my prior post.

Fair enough :)

They also say on that video that fog and reversing lights are part of the test - reversing lights and rear fog lights are not covered at all.
