Guys, i asked the insurers for an agreed value of £8500. sent them a ton of receipts and garage bells for over 3k. they cam e back with 7K!! said i could send them an 'independent engineers evaluation from a member of the Institute of Automotive Engineers and Assessors.'

anyone shed any light on this pls. or know anyone that can provide this in the Woking, Surrey area??

thanks

who is your insurer?

its not uncommon for them to ask for an engineers report but i would consider changing insurers as most just need several current pictures of van to make an evaluation.

Agree with Johnny, change your insurer! try cherished Insurance up there and mention earlybay for a discount ^^^ ;) they saved me a few squid and the agreed valuation is hassle free 8)

I'm guessing it's Adrian Flux? Sounds similar to the letter they sent to me. They went off the purchase receipt and ignored all the money spent on repairing/replacing things. Kind of expected it to be honest so I figured I'd leave it as it is for now and change insurers next year....

The only reason i can think why an insurance company asking you for a report is for road worthiness? but why when you have a valid MOT? i dont think a company that asks for this report really know the vw camper market. VW buses are definitely better looked after than your daily driver. The majority are low mileage, probably less than 5K a year and are treated with kid gloves. You need a valid MOT so it must be good enough to drive.... so why would you need an engineers report? daft really.

I'd take my business elsewhere to be honest. As said above there are plenty of companies that will agree, a hassle free value with the correct and current pictures of your bus as long as your valuing the bus at reasonable price. 8.5k isn't really that much in the current market. Kind of petty of them only offer 1.5K short of what its actually worth.

yeah - it is Adrian Flux!!
i dont think asking 8.5k is too much - i asked them if they could show me some examples of what i could buy for 7 if mine went missing and they told me they dont base the value on that!!?? surely thats the whole point? i think the term 'Agreed Value' should perhaps just be 'give us another tenner and a load of time sending receipts and pictures for a laugh'
I would happily change but only just paid a years subs to them and I'm guessing they will rip me off to cancel??

Same boat as me then with paying for a year. The valuation I got was £900 less than what I asked for but will defintely look at moving next year. Seemed to be the only place that gave a reasonable price for using the vehicle daily though.

Not sure what they would charge for cancelling, might be worth checking it out though

daily drivers are a different kettle of fish and there are few classic insurers that will even give you a price for a daily.

Yup I found that out already :) I might be able to not use it daily from next year so I'm hoping that will open up a few more options for me. Any idea what the max mileage is that most places offer?

the only place i found that was unlimited milage was AON classic insurance. They were bought out last year by footman James funnily enough but the renewal was still unlimited milage.

Guess I'll need to keep it down for a better deal then. I reckon I should be able to stick to 5k pretty easily, just need to stop being lazy and start biking to work

I'm with Footman James and my policy allows me to use it for work and is unlimited mileage. The agreed value of £13000 meant sending in pics and details of work done since ownership and they honer the valuation for 3 years. It also comes with european breakdown. The policy is a bit more expensive than some quotes I had but at £210 I am really happy with the service.

I remember looking at the footman james website but I don't know if I got a quote off them or not. Might have put me off as I couldn't get one online. I'll put them on the list for next year. Sorry for hijacking your thread r73!

Im just in the process of doing the same with footman,i sent everything off and they sent it back because i hadnt filled in the vehicle details  go figure as ive insured with them for over a year and surely they know what vehicle they insure.
Its common practice to offer a lower valuation thats why ive put in 14k  so they can beat me down.

gonna call them tomorrow and prob cancel it - thieving bast**ds!
so is footman james the one to try?
mine is limited to 5000 miles i'm 36 with no accidents and 3 points and i think the premium was just under £400!!
needed it in a hurry insured on the chassis while i got the reg.

Just upped my agreed valuation from 10k to 14k with Footman James ( they accepted it - yippee :D ). Just needed to send them up to date photos and a list of all work carried out. You can do your own valuation up to 15k and above that you need a specialist to give you a valuation.

As said before slightly expensive but unlimited mileage, european breakdown cover and other useful bits and bobs.

im almost the same, 36, no points, 5000 miles and mine was £110 (includes european breakdown), an agreed valuation of 9K, At £400 i think your being robbed  .

been stitched right up chaps - said they would give me £67 back if i cancelled after 3 months!!

Ouch that is a hefty hit. Your policy seemed quite high to start with. Mine was £295 with unlimited mileage for me and my girlfriend. I'm 28, no accidents no points and she's 25 no accidents and 3 points

I'm with Footman James too, have been for a few years. I've always been really happy with their service but never had to make a claim.

Just got my annual renewal notice the other day and it's gone up by about 17% (from £544 to £633). That's for one fully comp policy with unlimited mileage that covers my 70 bus, 71 beetle, 73 beetle and 2005 new beetle. The 3 aircooled have agreed valuations (£7500, £3500, £3500) and I have breakdown and European cover and one other named driver on the policy. I'm 38 with no points.

I'm considering looking around for a cheaper quote, so I called Footman James first and got it down to £616. Considering I'm happy with the quality of their service, perhaps I should stick with them after all. In the current climate maybe a £72 increase for 4 vehicles shouldn't come as such a surprise...
