My engine has recently started making an ominous knocking sound on start up.

Its a 1600 twin port in standard unmolested trim.

It only makes the noise on the first start of the day and is then fine.

It only knocks for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes mechanicly quiet.

Its as if its taking this short time for the oil to circulate.

There is the smallest amount of detectable end float on the bottom pulley.

Is it on the way out / Am I on borrowed time ?.

Is there anything I can or should do to cure this (without ripping the engine out) ?.

Should I be saving for a recon engine ?.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks for reading.

If you can only hear and/or feel the movement its ok.

If you can see the movement its not ok and your on borrowed time.

I think the current engine will have to remain until it does go bang.

I have been saving for a replacement 1776 for a while now.

Has or does anyone run a 1776 with a standard Pict 3 34 carb and airbox ?.

I may have to run a new larger engine with the original set up until I can save up for a set of twin carbs.

Just trying to stay on the road for as long as poss or conversly be off the road for as short a time as poss.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I had end float on my motor and I ignored it as I didn't think or knew lot about it as I was in dorset at the time drinking cider. Had to get back so made a calculated decision that , f**k it, its now knackered so lets see how far it will go .The further i drove the harder it came to talk to my mates in the back. Got as far as Newport , about 20 mins from home.

get it out mate and get it sorted befor its too late.
