Is the Gear-Shift Pole / Shaft supposed to be bent?

I thought the bend was at the box end a slight radius upwards to the connector for the shift block, I thought the remainder was straight?

mine was bent to the right from memory at the box end - plumbers torch and a scaffold tube bent back into shape

wait for some more opinions - Trikky would be a good one to reply as he worked on them iirc
