Just sold my Beetle and looking for a Bay now :) , just found this one in the pictures for sale
can somebody please confirm that is a crossover Bay but with the wrong rear bumper? Any positive or negative comments about it before I view it are welcome.
Thanks

Yep definately a crossover , large back light and lipped front arches, also should have disc brakes at the front.

Hard to comment not knowing how much its for sale. Looks like a bit of filler etc around the windscreen, which could be a nightmare and the underseal, dark paint half way up the sliding door always makes me nevrous. But like I say depends on asking price and how far your budget will stretch

looks like a crossover to me, take a strong magnet if you go see it.

I certainly will, it is the essential part of the toolkit for looking at old VW's :).
It is up for £2k with 3 months Mot which does not seem too bad but a viewing might change my mind.

I spoke to the chap selling it today and he did say that rust is appearing around the screen lower edge, bottom of both doors are holed, one rear arch is a bit rusty and the crank main oil seal is leaking on the engine, he has owned it 13 years.

well could be a good bus, as above i dont like the sight of black paint on the loower half, so have a cood check there. dont be affraid to push hard with your thumb, oh and take overallls or something you dont mind using to look under it :p

good luck, let us know how you get on.

Well the £2k and the fact he has owned it 13 years is a positive.

Welcome to the forum as well

The plate would suggest a late that said date of build and registration dont necessarily go hand in hand, have a look at the chassis number and the M plate (get as many pics of the bus and review at your leisure)....

Its unusual for a late panel to be replaced for an early but where needs must an all that.....

Plate points to it more than likely being pre '73

That's what I said, more than likely a pre '73.

The M codes etc will definately confirm this (also, the V5 - or what ever its called nowadays - will give you a good clue, if its available that is ;) ).

The paint mis-match on the front panel would make me think it's a '73 model with early front...

just had another look, isnt the sliding door different on late bays? the way the handle moves? looks like a crossover to me.

A lot of crossovers were sold off cheap due to the "new" model coming in, so there are a lot of them around on an 'L' Plate.

Easiest way to identify the model year is to look at the 3rd digit of the chassis number, it will be located in the engine bay on the LHS.

looks like a crossover 8) 8) to me too.........the front floor/dog legs would show if it were a late with early front panel on?

Mine is a 72 on an 'L' plate

where is it?.........any places or people nearby you can go for advice?

Maybe someone on here is near by...........or know a garage near to you?

Front panel change isn't the end of the world (air box issues maybe lots more ££££ though)....doors etc. bolt on and readily available........what is the chassis like.....

Can be a bit confusing crossovers  there are plenty in both K and L plate and its not hard to fit a late rear bumper if an early is not available.
Lates as we know them also first appeared in late L reg and until late 73 still featured the early sliding door handle, the early petrol flap, heater levers and steering wheel.

M codes and chassis number is your only hope but I would say its almost certainly a crossover.

Yep, crossover by the looks of it. Mine is an 'L' reg crossover too.

Is that a Danbury badge I can just about make out on the rear, Pike? :)
