hi, my bay is down 1 spline on the rear plus has wagenswest horse shoes fitted, with kyb gas shocks on all 4 corners,

the problem i have is that the drive shafts are fouling the chassis, its not the lowest van out there by a long way so does that mean all the other slammed vans have had their chassis worked on to clear them??

please if any one has any pics of this being or been done i would like to see them.

not the best pics but like i said people are running theirs lower!

Hi
Ive got the same problem 2 splines up (lower) and my vans a crossover 1972.I was thinking don't know for sure but maybe ,its mentioned in here " I would love that green bay near the end  " http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=156211&highlight=slammed" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; That the rear chassis isn't the same as pre 70 model so they can go 2 splines up (lower) and not have clearance problems.Your van (very nice 8) ) looks a lot lower than mine (Rim to arch gap).Your running 14" wheels (very nice Im thinking of doing something like this with my steels ;) ) and your rear arches are the early type which in my opinion make the van look lower than with the flared type arch. The second pic (wedding photo)it looks just as low as most of the slammed bus's ive seen. :?" what am i going on about" That thread ^^^explains it :D ..Dave

This green bay :shock: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=56101408" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

hi thanks for the kind words about my bay, as for the green one.....sweet as, i wsh mine was that low!!

as for the arches on mine it was a school boy error, i ordered all the wrong arches didnt get round to fitting them for ages after then couldnt return them so on they went, i do prefer the early arches tho.

iv raised mine one spline at the rear now and levelled the front, it looks awful imo.
gonna have to notch the chassis i think,

Its a XO isnt it? therefore the flared arches front and rear? or am I missing summit?

72 XO the rear end changed but didnt think it was to the extent that it made dropping the rear more difficult may be wrong...

it is indeed a cross over, and yep it did have flared arches, that is until i replaced them with flat lips!

i raised the suspension one spline on the rear so now i think its only lowered by the horse shoe plates, it does drive soo much better although it has more roll than a bakery

so am i correct in saying that all the early bays and splits that are slammed on the floor have not had any chassis clearencing done :!:

Ah now you've brought splits into the equation .... they first have to do away with reduction boxes .... to get it to the floor or properly slammed you've got to think about notching

Mine is quite low too and no notching been done...yet. I'm finding the outer CV boot catches the chassis tho, cos you can see the wear on both boot and paint!!
Will try and get some pics up...

Done a bit of notching today :D

70mm hole cutter, don't go for the cheap one like I did first only just managed to get half way through the chassis

DSC00656.jpg

bosch one much better finished the first hole of and cut the other side a lot easier, and its not even touched the teeth
DSC00657.jpg

Piece of flat bar bent to shape,I pushed it up into the notch and marked the bottoms of the chassis .Cut the ends off and welded it in.

Back shot of what I had before 23mm :(

And now :D Just got to take the engine out and weld the backs up

 Had to do a mockup just to see what it would look like with horse shoe plates fitted

Did you do the same for the a-arm?
Hi joval
No I haven't done the a-arms ,was going to but once I got the wheel off and had a look its very close to the [ angle bracket thats welded to the top of the bumpstop mount]

DSC00268.jpg

.If you wanted to you could chop the bottom off the bracket ,and drill two holes side by side. Its at too much of an angle to the chassis to just drill one hole with a 70mm cutter.Im thinking horse shoe plates and have a play around with the splines.I got abit carried away and centred the hole saw on the box of the chassis as opposed to the lip on the bottom.
Maybe if you use a 50mm cutter on the a- arm notch it would be better
but you need a 70mm on the drice shaft to clear the cv boot

Ah, didn't spot the horse-shoe plates. ;)
Haven't got them yet ^^^its just a mock up to see.I dont wan't to go that low   ,I just wanted a 2 spline drop[look] with out the knocking and more suspension travel [softer shocks]
