lowered shock absorbers

i am just about to lower the rear by a couple of splines and fit an adjustable beam and being a newbie was wondering if its worth fitting shortened shocks?

if so, can anyone recommend any brand to get or stay clear from.

also, whats the deal with specifying the new length? are they pretty standard?
