Help please,

I have got 14" narrow five wheels and have got some domed hub caps which are slightly to big to clip on, but only very
very slightly.

Any ideas, or are the wide five that close to the narrow five?

Many thanks in advance..

Cheers

Jon

Standard narrow 5 hub caps clip around the raised portion of the centre of the wheel whereas wide five wheels have clips on them but a lot further out, they are very different in size.

I'm sure you can get baby moon hub caps or similar that fit narrow 5 wheels though, have you tried doing a search ?

What has got me is they are so close to fitting, probably 2-3mm difference on the back of the
hub cap to the one's that fit nice and snuggly..

I thought the wide five hub caps were a lot lot larger??

Do you think if I tapped them around the back with a rubber mallet they would get to fit?? bit crude I know, but I want
the one's with the VW logo, and baby moons are plain, unless anyone has some they want to sell :D

A mate ran a set of logoed domed caps on narrow 5 wheels. No idea how.

I'm trying to picture the issue. Can you not trim the tab end to make it shorter or bend them out a little. Take care when bending them they tend to snap quite easily.

I Have got 'one' domed logo hub cap which fits perfectly, but only one

It's the hub cap which is slightly to big for the wheel, I wondered if the hub cap' back rim was bend in slightly if it would work,
or is there another way of fitting them??

Aspro, if you can find out off your mate, that would be cool..

Cheers

Jon

I've had them on my wheels, no problems just had to push a bit hard to get them to clip on.
Those were original VW one's, so maybe that's the difference :(

If it helps - a close up photo of stock wide 5 in this thread:

Cheers slow lane.. does anyone know the measurement of the inside of narrow five hub cap, and wide five hub cap??
It would just be nice to know what I have?
Cheers

Narrow 5 hub caps have a much flatter apprearance to them

Wide 5 here http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Hub-Cap-Domed-Chrome-Original-VW-T1-65-T2-70-113601151GEN_act_shop.product_pID_100957264.htm?crumbStartPage=6&crumbStartRow=88" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Narrow 5 style here http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Hub-cap-SILVER-Gen-VW-Brazil-New-Kombi-spec-251601151G_act_shop.product_pID_190446.htm?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wide 5,

(the shiney one bought off this forum - and is more domed. The old one came with van - don't know if OG or not)

pretty near 24cm inside diameter

Thanks again guy's,

I will measure a narrow five when I get home, but it is within a couple of mm.. I'm sure

Cheers

I use to run a set of repro's on my narrow 5's. made a dolly & hammered with a rubber mallet to shrink the edge a couple of mm.

It's the only way I can think of making them fit.
What did you make the dolly out of ?, am I correct in saying the dolly would be the part which you put
inside the rim to stop it going to far when you hit it with a hammer??

An old oak chair leg, cut the "V" edge the same profile as the inside edge of the hub cap

Thanks Chaps for all you replies on this one.

I looks like it's going to be 'Hammer Time' if you hear me scream, I have either hit my thumb or buggered up the hub cap..

Have a great weekend

Jon

Hammer time :)

I had baby moons on my narrow 5's - 1 OG and 3 repro and all fit with a bit of persuasion

The other option is maybe a bit over the top, but if like me you REALLY wanted to have dome hubcaps & the early look you could get wheel/adapters and some early rims. The dome hubcaps fit flush with the curve of the early style rims and imho just look the part, i lost a stainless domed-hubcap from a late bay wheel cause of the loose-fit £25.00 down the drain.

Mines an early-bay but being a '71 it was the first year of small stud pattern/disc brakes etc
