Hi all

Only recently purchased a 1971 Westfalia - bit scarey to be honest although my wife learnt to drive in one!

Cheers

Hi

I've been lurking for a while but at last I am the proud owner of a 1970 cal import deluxe. I owned a cal look beetle over 10 years ago. But with an expanding family (and waistline) and an oversize dog it was time to get something we could all fit in. Looking forward to asking questions, getting things wrong and learning stuff :D

Hiya Nick and welcome, let`s get busy with the piccies mate, it is almost law around here  Big welcome anyhow and do your best with the piccies because we all like to see as many Earlies as we can. Mr Scoote, that`s a great intro with pictures and all. Looks to be a great bus, might see you at a show soon

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, It`s here !!! This is summer !!! Yeah  8)

Hi all, I'm Ewan and my noble steed is a 71 LHD panel
I've been mooching around the forum for ages so i'm used to the massive sarcasm that comes with being on here! :msn4:
currently trying to get too much done in too little time before the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the camper and bus show!
I'll be sure to get a build thread sorted when i stop to take some photos.
Cheers

Hi Ewan, glad you made an appearance ;) you`ll probably find something useful on here (not me by the way) so feel free to join in where you can and your piccies and build thread will be more than welcomed by us picture nutters. The level of sarcasm on this forum ebbs and flows and I think it`s got something to do with how your own restoration is coming along at the time  If it`s all gone Pete Tong (frequently) then it`s a nice release while you gather momentum to start again  Mostly though,, this is one of the friendliest forums on the net and you`ll enjoy meeting some of the ``charactors`` at some of the shows and maybe sharing a Stella or two :p

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,, And that`s what it`s all about

Hello all, im new to the forum

Im Phil, live in derby with my wife and little 2 year old girl. Bought an import riviera crossover a couple of years back from Britt Granis in Oregon after a few years trying to do a rolling resto on a uk right hand drive and not being able to use it decided to pass it on to someone else so could get the family camping as soon as possible and have a daily summer driver for myself

Its fairly original and stock, has had a little repair on the back arch in the US (wish it was just left as is) and possibly a different gearbox but other then that cant find anything else major. its sailed through the last 2 mots and has let me down yet, runs a little rich and im struggling to find the correct bolt for the top of one of the webber carbs. however was driving back from ashbourne the other day and the gear shifter started shaking quite a lot so have noticed it has lost the front gearbox mounting plate, made it home with no problems. I cant find one of these anywhere so any help locating one would be appreciated, ill post in the other section too but thought id introduce myself first.

Had some great help from the eircooled forum getting it over here and since then have just run it with a service and a few initial bits and bobs for the MOT.

Hi, I'm Bri and although not new to vw's I've not touched one for about three years. Just bought an import 72 crossover delux (so it's kind of early...) which is super solid but will be going through the entire mechanics. First load of parts is on the way, pity I've had to delay getting the van though as my garage door is buggered
There'll be plenty of questions!

Hiya you lot :p A massive welcome to you all and thanks for the pictures  Good luck with the search James, I`m afraid it`s getting harder and harder to find a mint bus for a grand :? The prices have been rising to unheard of levels and is another topic for discussion you`ll find every so often on the general forum. Phil and Bri seem to have the best idea with imported vans and seems to be the sensible option unless you really love the battle with the red monster (rust) which no one ever seems to really win. And Hola Hola to you too over there in Spain, do you have a bus ??? Tell us about it

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Bonus!!! It`s summer

So its arrived ! last night on a trailer

Hello :)

I am new to this forum, i have been lurking around for the last to weeks reading posts and looking at pictures of all the nice bays, so i thought that i would introduce myself :D I'm from Denmark

I have gotten myself into buying a '68 panelvan that has sat in a barn for the last 20 years, with plenty of rust on it, it was converted into a camper in the 70's where it was unfortunately also facelifted so it dosent really look like a earlybay anymore, i have never owned a aircooled vw before so its all new to me, but i have a few minis :) i havent got it home yet so dont have a lot of pictures, but cant wait to get my hands on it :D

Hi all,

I'm new here, and also quite new still to the VW world, so looking forward to learn more. I am no stranger to old cars though, I also own a '71 Lancia Fulvia coupe, a '71 Volvo 144 (both now in storage) and a '71 Land Rover Series IIA, and a '74 Range Rover.
Recently I bought a '68 Westfalia here in Costa Rica, where we live temporarily. I'm planning to fix it up completely, although it is in quite decent shape, and mostly original inside. I love this kind of specialised forum, the knowledge that this one has is spectacular, and it served me greatly when I was preparing to buy the bus, so thanks for that!

Regards,

Bob

Hi all!

We have recently adopted a 1972 T2 bay Devon. She needs afew things looking at...but I couldn't be happier.

Looking forward to getting her back up to scratch and taking our "Tigerlilly" camping.

Regards.

Here she is from last weekends antics at Bristol Aircooled:

I popped the roof and was pleasantly surprised! Shame about the dink in the front panel tho :(

Welcome one and all - holiday season so normally several welcomes would have been posted by now. This is a great forum and there is already loads of information available in the archives if you use the SEARCH function. Been on here 2 years with a restoration in progress for that period. I think it will still be till at least another year before we get our bus back on the road! This place keeps me going! Good luck!

Hi all... not new , but have been absent for the past five years due to ill health
Just checking in to say hi again as I feel bit rude not doing so , hello again to any that remember me and nice to meet you to those who dont 8)

Hi! - How's it going?

Just saying hello from Ayrshire in Scotland - just purchased Californian imported and restored "wee white westy" from another forum member - which seems to attract admiration and scorn in equal measure on forums! I'd love to say I'd always wanted one - but that would be a fib. We hired one (wife, me and The Boy (aged 5) during the summer and had amazing amount of fun even though I had a broken arm at the time. So much fun we decided to buy one a few weeks back - we've already been away 4 times in that period and we're having a great laugh. Now the (Scottish) weather is closing in I'm getting all the things I'd like to get short term fixed with the van.

I know everyone here is picture daft so here's a couple to get started

Hi Guys, Im new to VW world. But so far I like all the information and easy way people are all loving their vans.

I have two T2 bays one is a 1973, not too bad and a full restore. The other was manufactured in 1970 and imported to the UK in 1971 when originally registered. But this is where the problems start with the 71. It is a wreck really, a shell not much more and had a fire in the engine bay which ruined most of the rear end. I bought it knowing what it was like as I would like to do something a little different with it.

Now this is the question to you all, and I expect some of you have had to do the same. This 71 has a chassis plate on the passenger wall as per usual. The one in engine bay lost due to fire. I have looked at the sources that told me what it is registered uk 1971 etc, but I does not tell me registration number which there are none on the shell. The one at the back, there was no engine hatch no plate. The one at front where the previous owner started to rub front down, took plate off. Then it sat outside for years, no one knows how long for sure. I cannot access information from previous owner, emigrated. No V5. So what is the best way to get it back on the road with a reg number and V5?

I have looked at Registration application, because I do not know the reg number it has to go either built up route and verified or new reg application for a age related no. But I need anyone to tell me the best way to go. I really do not fancy spending hours repairing and rebuilding it to find I cannot register it in the end. I have applied for a certificate from the VW Museum Germany, this may take a long while though.

Anyone got good news on this? As bad a state its in, Does not matter as I can do the rebuild side to my spec, But still want the right old number on it so it looks right and of course tax exempt!

Look forward to your replies and to meetings

Cheers
Mark
