Hello Earlybay,

Had our T2 bay camper for approx, 48hrs and despite being exquisitely difficult to drive, I've already completely and utterly fallen for it.

So, I can see it needs some work to future proof him, and I'm starting with the doors. The seals are nearly perished, the scrapers are utterly utterly perished and the driver window has to be pulled down as it's wound. The passenger side has introduced the only real rust I can pick up on him, with some bubbling under the door itself. Boths driver and passenger cab doors don't really sit flush with the camper at their bottoms, sooo:

With rust at the bottom, poorly aligned lower halves and perished seals all around - can it be a false economy repairing these doors, should I be simply splashing out on some new ones with someone like Just Kampers?

How does everyone here go about painting individual parts for their campers, self sprayed or do shops do jobs this small?

Advice most appreciated, thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum, and to the joys of bus ownership (which in reality means caring for a hunk of old metal until it is time to pass it on to somebody else, having chucked a load of cash at it :D ).

I am no expert on door refurbishment, never done it myself, but I would say that regardless of whether you repair or replace the actual doors, you would need to fit new seals and scrapers anyway, and sort out the dodgy mechanism too. So the condition of the seals etc is largely irrelevant to the decision.

Bear in mind that new doors can be either refurbed originals (Volksheaven, etc. import them 'as is') or repros (Brazilian for example) and there is a quality difference. Might be as well to have the existing doors repaired if the rot is not too bad. Virtually all paint shops will colour match small areas.

Post some pics.

If the rust is only bubbling, and the doors are original, I would defo keep them, make sure the drain holes at the bottom of the doors are clear so the water can drain away, and not sitting in the bottom of the doors.

If you can save your doors do try, but if the dreaded tin worm has got hold,

We can help:

Do you have opening or fixed 1/4 windows?

I would recommend going for the better quality kits we do as they come with the much nicer german quality door rubber:
