Ermm dunno why you'd want to really cause the flux core is meant to act like a subsitute for the gas.

If your not getting the welds you want you need to experiment with the set up of your MIG. Also worth trying a different gas. I learnt on Argoshield, and the college runs argon as well, but we're on CO2 or pub gas at work. Have to say I much prefer the argon.

What problems are you having?

its just that someone gave me some flux core just thought it might work save me buying more wire Frankie.

Been pricing up a AC/DC TIG for doing alloys and stainless at work... and people think MIGs are dear!

Nuts aint it!! We have an AC/DC set at work its about 3'x3'x4'!!!! Its owd though!! still not learnt to TIG alloys but ive been having ago at stainless and i might have a go at putting my outer sills on with it

This thread has got me thinking about welding again. havent used one (in the proffesional capacity) for
nearly 18 years

I used to work in a foundry (interesting work) doing a lot of TIG, welding up worn aluminuim outboard props,
& brazing brass ships props shaping & balancing them, & a bit of stainless work too.

I then worked for another company doing heavier gauge stuff, mainly MIG/ARC, one of my last jobs was
fabricating and assembling a balustrade for a PORSCHE garage in Exeter - its still there today! (though no
longer a porsche garage)

I did a City & guild 201 engineering & went on to do a City & Guild (dont remember what) welding, but left the
trade before i finished the course :(

Im going to look at my local college to see what courses they do for a bit of a refresher/basic welding qualification.

Cheers :)

flux core is a messy business, thats the diffference. Its like stick welding where you need to remove the slag with a chipping hammer you will need to agressively wire brush it and theres alot more post weld spatter to tidy it up. Obviously the welds arent as neat and im not sure about strength. The only real benifit is its better suited to outdoor use if its breezy.
