Just changed my oil for the first time. No probs with fitting the strainer etc and i put at least 2.5lts if not 3lts of oil back in. The van runs Ok but the dipstick is bone dry.
Why is this as i want to make sure i have enough oil back in?
Any ideas?

I was always told when there is no oil left on the dipstick ...... get a longer dipstick

seriously though, is the dipstick an original or one of them custom alloy things? and what Aaron said, do you have a deap sump fitted?

And remember you need to give it at least 10 mins for the oil to run down and collect in the sump. Also easy to not get the dipstick fully home if your just dibbing it in and out which would also give a false reading.

Thanks for this. I feel like renaming myself'Spongebob' with the amount of info i am absorbing at the moment. I thought you just bought the van and drove it!
How can i tell if i have a deep sump? The dipstick looks original and is about 6-8" long.

look underneath and you'll see an extension to the sump, is it a T1 or T4 engine?

pics would help....

A deep sump is shown on my thread its an old one but its on page 3.
