Going to have a go to make my own units for the van. Borrowed my dads router for the doors. Any tips on the usage on one. What do the bearings do on some of the bits. Back to basics b4 i start to bodge.

Cheers RD.

The bearings act like a "guide rail"to guide the cutter along the wood. What do you want to do with the router? i will be happy to point you in the right direction

wanted to make the doors out of MDF with a bit of a fancy edge and grove on the front. Was then going to prime and sparay door.

Get yourself some clamps to secure what you are working on...its safer & I've seen a lot of work ruined
because you start pushing the timber with the router. this site could be a start for you

The bearings guide the cutting part. Usually used to put a decorative edge on the wood. As the bearing follows the edge, the edge has to be nice and smooth or any ripples will be produced in the routed edge.
Generally you move the router to cut against the direction of rotation of the cutting bit.
It is advisable to make several passes with the router to achieve the desired depth of cut rather than try to do it i one pass.
Do not try to push the router along faster than it can cut the wood. If you make a c*ck up and the wood is to be painted you can fill with 2 pack filler (P38 etc) smooth down and cut again.

Mark.

If your not familiar with using one i would keep it simple and just put a moulding on the edge and use a bit with a bearing on to guide you, keep the router base nice and flat to the mdf and make sure that the cut edge the bearing is running on is nice and straight and smooth as this will dictate the finished result.
