Not an Early Bay but my new barn find 53 Oval project.

It always happens to other people, a friend of a friend knows someone who's got a mate that knows of a barn where some old VW's are stashed.

Well that turned out to be me today and it was only 10 mins up the road from me

The guy had a 51 Split Bug, two 53 Ovals and a 57, along with a T25, MGB's, Roller, floorpans, shells etc stashed away in various garages/barns.

I ended up buying this, a September 53 lhd Ragtop Oval

Its pretty much complete along with loads of period stickers, needs bottom 6 inches welding and i think it may be a Standard Oval going by the interior colour and half headliner.

I have a very understanding missus!

Cheers, still got my 61 to get on the road as well, use to be my daily :mrgreen:

Plans for the 53 involve removing the hand painted silver to reveal (hopefully) the standard grey, welding up up the body where needed and restoring the pan with narrowed beam and a hefty height adjustment. The idea is to try and preserve the stickers etc that are on it :mrgreen:

Well i thought i'd have ago at removing some of the hand painted silver as i was sure that underneath would be the original 'Standard Grey' paint, i've kind of tried most things, 2 pack thinners, petrol, driveway cleaner, antifreeze and graffiti remover.

The best way seems to be oven cleaner, coarse wire wool and time, lots of it!

I tried a small patch just to see if my hunch was right, sure enough grey paint started to appear

An hour and half later and after a quick compound with G3 and some polish

Just hope theres more hidden under the silver :mrgreen:
