Do you have these, one on each cylinder head, underneath in the middle. They are about the size of a large stamp. The cut out on one side is for the thermostat rod.

Yes, I do have those in place. They don’t seem to mention or show them in either my Bentley book or Haynes manual.
These are what I was thinking of, the larger cylinder plates.

Ah excellent at least those are easier to get hold of, I had both types missing when I get my 69.
 
I got a complete, slightly later (‘72-and up?) air cleaner off flea bay with the vacuum controlled (switched by thermostat) flap. I believe the correct system for a 1971 model has a wax-filled widget that operates the flap-picture below. It’s the spring gizmo to the right of the intake horn.These are difficult to get as I think it was a one year only deal

It was, your far better off with the vac system as long as the thermo switch thingy on the top of the air cleaner is working correctly 👍

I “tested it” by shoving a hairdryer up the intake and although I can’t say at what temperature it triggered the switch- it did work, as did the vacuum operated flap
