Hello people please can you give me some resolve, in cooling requirements for this lump. Definately running a remote cooler, with filter from a full flow oil pump, how effective is this are any of you running full flow oil pumps to remote coolers which are best, and what ratio of oil gets through to standard oil cooler compared to the remote on a full flow oil pump.

Many questions but want to fit a BMD pulley system however, you cannot with porsche cooling which I don't want anyway. Please post some pics if you have any which kits are best, I've seen the bugback and Empi kits from VW heritage

any info greatly appreciated.....Ben

Why do you consider an external cooler necessary?

Most 1776s shouldn't need an external cooler - A stock doghouse cooler should be adequate for most needs.

An external filter would be of benefit though. If you do fit one, it would be advisable to run a thermostat plate to bypass the cooler at startup temperatures.

Hi Ben - I've fitted a full flow system on my 1641cc with external filter and cooler and also used an oil temperature thermostat from John Maher (see http://www.johnmaherracing.co.uk/jmrshop/index.htm > oil > Oil temperature thermostat.

The oil comes out of the block via the take off cover on the pump and straight into the filter. Then from the filter to the thermostat. If the oil is too cold, it goes straight back to the block. When it's warm enough, the thermostat allows it to flow through the additional cooler too, then back to the block.

Hope that helps.

Yeah thats superb,

Just had a look at the link below your reply, good work going there. Alot of drive-way stuff going on too, I really do need a garage or at least a car port on the side of the house.

Thanks for your help, keep up the good work, nice to see the missus getting involved, mine's in charge of interior no messy stuff, thats down to me.

Ben

Yeah, the driveway stuff was in its early days when we'd just got back from a round-the-World trip in 2005 and had no fixed abode. Now got a house with large drive, car-port, over-sized single garage and an inspection pit...I never want to move, but fast expanding family means we may have to :(
