What's the recommended engine oil for general use ? I believe mine has 15/40 currently.

Any preferences on brand ? Any to avoid or is it just a trip to Halfords ?

Bang on ^^^. Most modern oils are much better than older style oils anyhow. I`m on the Halfords one in the green tin for classic vee hickles, I think it`s 15/40 or similar and it`s a mineral oil. The only thing with oils that I`m a bit fussy about is keeping to the same oil and not mixing them as some don`t like it, not so bad now a days admittedly. I do my oil change and I keep a litre or so of the same stuff in the engine bay ready for a little top up as required and I stick to the same oil thereafter. In an emergency if you are out and about, any oil is betterer than no oil just to get you home, but then it`s time for an oil change

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Where`s that can of worms ???

We've always used Petronas Syntium 800 semi synth or Castrol GTX 15/40 semi syth in Bod, doesn't overheat (even driven at 65mph in the summer) and it seems not to drink it too much at all. We have the standard 1.6 twin port engine. Hope this helps. Others seem to rave on about the mono grade 30 Morris engine oil - We have never used that in Bod. Our engine is a Vega reconditioned motor and is only a 6 or 7 years old so we thought why stick in some old fashion mono grade when it is a relatively new engine.

As long as it's clean, that'll be fine- especially as it's warm out ATM, the viscosity goes down a bit.
For the past 7 years I've used clean mineral oil. That's been my only requirement- current engine has just passed 100K in my ownership, 70-80K of which was in the last three years. This was on the bug, on the camper I've gone 12 miles and had to replace a cylinder head after the first 4. Good times.

Just make sure it's got clean oil, and enough of it.
