due to the fact that some animal po decided to remove both of my bulkheads from my van. i have no m code plate so dont have any clue of its original colour. when i bought it, it was a really dodgy green colour and i do not intend to have it that colour ever agian (see head lamp bowls)

but whilst doing a bit of work in the petrol tank area it dawned on me that the og paint is cream.
would this have been the colour of my van when it rolled out of the factory or do all vans have this colour base coat in their nether regions

does anyone know what colour this might be as chosing the colour for my van is so hard and it would be so nice to simply use the one it came with

Hi,

Looks to me like its Pastel White L90D, but difficult to tell from the photo.

is pastel white an off white colour? it looks a bit like the creamy westy's ive seen about like stuarts or slammedresto's i may have to tcut part of it up then get a better photo. or cut an inconspicuous bit off it and try and compare with another van.
how many whites did a 1971 come in?

Looks like Pearl White L87 :?: I cant check my book sorry as its packed away awaiting a house move

Between 1968 and 1973 the VW regular paint codes for white vans were either Pastel White (L90D), Pearl White (L87), or Lotus White (L282).
Try borrowing some paint chip sheets from your local motor factors, they let you "see" through the sample to your paint.

have a route through the bits in the back of my workshop last night and it appears that my van was very obviously cream whe it was made. the back of the engine lid is still og so i have given it a bit of a tcut. i dont know if its any easier to tell the colour now

I think Pearl White (L87) was used up to th end of 1970 and pastal white (L90D) was first used in 1971 onwards. What year is your van?
Halfords still sell Pastal White (L90D) in Spray cans and paint chip kits. So you could take your engine lid in and match it up?

mines a 1971 disk with small rear lights. i couldnt say whether or not it hav flared arches or not as it was pre bastardised before i got it. you'll spot me at the next show, walking round with a realy shoddy green and whit engine lid holding it up to random vans
