Running down steep hills yesterday, in gear, and was aware of quite a bit of popping from the exhaust - is this an indication of running a bit rich? (coupled with a very very slight hesitation at lower revs - just about a small flat-spot, but nothing serious)
If so, which was to I tweak the distributor to fix...? Engine generally runs very very well....

Could be running a bit rich for sure, is the idle okay? it could also be a hole in the exhuast somewhere 8)

I'll check the exhaust, although it is all new, so should be ok.
Idles perfectly, starts in an instant...

you checked the heat riser tubes , i had a leak on one the other week , it drove ok , ran ok but once it was repaired it was a lot better 8)

Did the popping start since replacing the exhaust? if so I would definitely check all joints.

Mine started to make a popping sound, then progressed onto full backfireing, used to scare people queing up to go into the cinema when we drove past, sounded like a drive by shooting.
Found to be a small hole in the exhaust box.

Used to be in the car parts trade and even new boxes ( vary rarely) were found to have holes in them.

Haven't had a chance to have a good look at joints yet - exhaust is new, as the van has been off the road for 8 years, but has been running fine, so either something has 'moved' or I have fiddled with the timing and may have [cough] turned the distributer slightly - was just wondering if the 'symptoms' suggested the timing might need advancing or retarding....
