hi all.
my bottom pulley wheel is quite wobbly when running, not loose, but like its bent or out of round, causing the belt to wobble everywhere and slightly shred.its quite noticeable just looking at thru pulley in tick over, heaven knows what its doing at 2.5k revs!!!

its og VW and had it powder coated with the other tinware.nite sure if it would contribute to crank wear?

Q - do you think the heat in the powder coating oven is enough to warp it?

how hard is it to put it on wonky, have I???

thoughts please.......:?:

Powder coating On the mounting face? Are you sure it's mounted properly?
I wouldn't think a pulley would get warped by powder coating.

Either way, make sure you sort it soon :)

A warped pulley will make short work of causing fretting on the woodruff key of the top pulley, leading to failures that end.

You bent it pulling it off.
If it were a customer's bus I'd get them a new flywheel
If it were mine, I'd run it at tickover and tap it with a hammer until I got lucky and bent it back straight.

whs^^^^^^and you cant fit it so it runs out cos it goes on a shaft.

I've done it. ;) I found the lump hammer worked well and it stayed straight after, but I didn't belt it one!
A note of caution - it wasn't that bad - if it's miles out there's a danger of splitting the steel which could lead to catastrophic badness. Fine for mine, I enjoy a catastrophy, but I don't like to cause same for others, so do as I say, not as I do.

I think I'll post a video up for you to have a look at.I was mindful ofvthd coating on the mounting hole do I rubbed it down with emery paper.watch this space.....

If in doubt get a new pulley, it will be worth it. Make sure its a genuine VW one and not some chrome *****. ;)

New pulleys dont have timing marks on the inner edge. Provided its a genuine VW one theres a dimple on the outer edge the pulley, the centre of which is TDC. You can always check its spot on with the old pencil down the plug hole method.

If your bus is running stock timing then 7.5 degrees BTDC is 11.5mm ahead (to the right) of TDC on a stock pulley.

Thanks Tricky!
Thinking of one of those NOS pulleys vwed has for sale.they have no timing marks on though.do you think could they could still be gen NOS?

Im not sure who VWED is. The genuine ones will look like the one in the photo, all the repro ones I have seen look different. Heritage seem to sell both genuine and repro ones though the price of the genuine seems shocking  You could always phone or PM Alex on here and ask his opinion since he works for them and would know what the quality is like on the repro ones since, with the prices being over £60 and £19 its worth checking out IMO.

On the other hand, if your pulley is now running true, is it even worth replacing?

JUst to add my bit, if VWED says it`s genuine then I guarantee you it will be genuine and exactly what he says it is. To the point that I wish some of the other people that supply some stuff were a quarter as genuine as this chap.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,And no it`s not me in disguise

Thanks Tricky, pulley still not true so think it will end replacing, not going to try and knock it straight myself.

Thanks Steve, silly me  have pm'd Ed.I've had a few bits from him and always been spot on!
