I'm in the process of trying to sort out some oil leaks two of which are coming from the push rod tube seals. I intend taking off the heads to inspect and was wondering if i can replace just the leaking tubes and seals or do i have to replace all eight?

Thanks,

Mark

Replace all the seals while you are doing it. Remember to re stretch the tubes before rebuilding.

When you take the heads off you will disturb all the pushrods tubes. It's unavoidable. When re fitting the tubes you fit new seals because for all the work to gain access it's daft not to replace them and risk a leak.

You can re use the tubes if you are sure they are in good condition.

When re fitting the heads make sure to follow the two different tightening sequences at two different torque settings, as described in the workshop manual. It's important to get these right.

Ive just discovered a leak on one, theres no chance I'm doing it, so whats the cost for replacing all at garage.

anyone got a idea

Worth looking at this if you don't fancy taking of the heads

These are perhaps what you want http://www.coolairvw.co.uk/Item/Shop_by_Vehicle~Baywindow_Products~Baywindow_Engine_Products~Baywindow_1600cc_Engine_Products~Valve_Train~Pushrods_and_Tubes~Performance_Pushrod_Tubes/AC10920175S/T1-P-T2-P-T3-P-T181_Scat_Spring_Loaded_Pushrod_Tube.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Easy to fit, just take the rocker cover off, realease the rocker shaft, take out the pushrod, break out the leaky tube and fit the sprung one and you should have a leak free engine again.

I believe these and the Jaycee tubes with the two oil seals to be the best, the empi type that I have used in the pass have leaked.

Thanks Paul and creationblue

Im gonna have to man up and try.

Jaycee pushrod tubes here. http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=1346313" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the responses guys. As the leaks are on both sides so i'd have to replace all the seals I may as well change all of the tubes too, probably with stock ones.

Geordie, give it a go! This will be the most I'll have ever stripped an engine down before but I'm quite looking forward to it. :D
