re new or re use

going to start on the engine for my bus this week i hope but the big question is the gear box. when i removed it the thrust bearing was badly marked down one side and there is some play in the drive so question is is it poss for me to replace the shaft bearing and thrust bearing or go for a recon, one other thing was it some times jumped out of fourth gear but thi never happened until i had the bus lowred ????? after i got it back the gear selection was crap and it never felt like it went into gear properly.
