If the face of the flywheel isn't almost mirror shiney it'll wear the seal quickly.
If it has a time worn goove in it from previous seals same.
If you have end float it speeds the wear.
If you don't oil it and the flywheel up when you fit the flywheel it'll tear
If you damage it fitting it...
Blah blah blah,

An oil thrower might have been a better idea - it works well at the pulley end.

Did you also replace the 'O' ring in the flywheel? This is often missed and is a common cause of oil leaks on the flywheel.

Yup, replaced the O ring both times too. :)

Thought I did all that right

Thought I would give a quick update...

Finally had this fixed and yes - it was the crankshaft oil seal....Feels strange now to have a clean rear end (oo-er) after a motorway blast.....No haze at all after blast to VW action at weekend.

Whilst the van was in I had clutch fitted too as dont plan on taking engine out again soon....

Also had the single most best thing done to the bus so far.....Had the throttle linkage sorted. For last 2 years my throttle pedal as been very low..Now its nice and high like everyone elses and I can get full throttle for the first time. ..Boy it does go now! Forget your twin carbs and big valve heads....just make sure your pedal is talking to your single solex properly!!1600cc SP Feels like a twin turbo subaru conversion now!! LOL

Bring on next weeks camping trip to North Norfolk!! Happy Days!
