Rear Torsion Bars

Quick question please.

Is there a difference between early bay / late bay rear torsion bars? Most places seem to list >71 but nothing before.

The PO of my crewie thought it was a good idea to weld the spring plate to the end of the torsion bar so now I can't get the spring plate off to swap to adjustables

Oh no, never weld them!
Yes, there is a difference in the number of splines. Taken from the samba:

"Buses up to '71 have 44 inner, and 48 outer splines and later buses have 48 inner and 52 outer splines. (unlike the bug, buses have more teeth on the outside - torsion plate end, and thus the fine adjustment is done in the opposite direction to beetles."
