Firstly let me apologise I know there are a lot of questions and discussions regarding carbs, twin carbs, horsepower and MPG.

I wish to increase the efficiency of my bus for a trip round Europe next year and was thinking of installing a twin carb kit and with no knowledge I am after some pointers as to what kits will be best for my needs. Currently running a stock 1600 twinport engine (I think). Have seen EMPI 34EPC kits are one of the cheaper varieties from new, but have no idea when it comes to guage, compatibility, auxilleries I will also need to buy, etc...

Hoping someone can spare me 5 mins to give me the low-down and an idea of what sort of kit I should be getting.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

If I had a 1600 twinport I'd get a pair of baby dells....my mates '72 bay had improved mpg & performance
Have chat to these people for buying & advice

Yep, Dellortos everytime, an all round better carb to Weber and EMPI carbs, and easy to maintain.

Either go for baby Dells as already mentioned or a pair of DRLA 36s.

You'll never look back I guarantee it. (Well, apart from mirror signal manouvre!)

I've purchased these on recommendations from numerous people, haven't been fitted yet so not sure on performance etc....however i'm told stronger mid range and improved MPG especially to a 1600cc. Although now fitting with a 1776cc engine on mine...take a look

I see that Dellorto.co.uk do a set for single port engines - any point? Or should one take the chance to 'upgrade' to twin port heads? Not sure I have seen a kit for single port before....

Webber ICTs come as a single port along with others....

great if you want to keep the reliability of the SP head and do away with the long manifold with a slight improvement on the power/mpg....

Don't bother with EMPI carbs, they are cheap chinese copies of Webers. They are really bad, I have seen a pair first hand. They are cheaper for a reason. As already said Dell'orto 34 FRDs (baby dells) are great, very similar to a Weber 34 ICT, but is slightly better on the power and economy figures. I have them on my bus, along with a vac dissy and I get a solid 32 mpg on a steady 55mph run, the bus flies up hills.

Thanks all, Dellorto seem to be the order of the day! Just have to convince my co-owner/missus :? If anyone see's any deals/bargains please point them in my direction!

As this is something i'm also thinking of i'm interested in (see some of my other threads) could someone explain the difference between 36's DRLA and 34 FRD's please?
Also i've looked on http://www.dellorto.co.uk (eurocarb) and they only list Webers for the VW Aircooled engines, where would i get a set of either DRLA's or FRD's from?

Can't beat a set of new Twin Weber 40's in my opinion. They are worth the extra money, and get them set-up on a rolling road (and correctly jetted for your engine)

Don't whatever you do go for twin kadrons.....

FRDs single barrel
DRLAs double barrels

depends where your priorities lie fuel economy or a bit more oompf...get them both correctly jetted and dialed in and your onto a winner

both very good options and getting harder to get yer mitts on, that said good quality webbers are getting difficult to source at a good price....keep your eyes open and try the samba see if owt available across the water....

I got my Dell'orto FRDs from California, the were second hand and advertised on thesamba.com. I got a pair of carbs & manifolds and cone filters for £168 inc P&P. They were in good order, but the needle valves were worn, but Eurocarb do full overhaul kits for £24.95. I also had to get a linkage from Eurocarb at £46 and we used a return spring from a 34 PICT. So they cost me about £240 to fit and my dad tuned them the old fashioned way. I get 32mpg.

I bought a set of reconditioned genuine italian Webber 36 IDFs on ebay for £90, in excellent condtion. The seller even jetted them for a 1600 twinport. Manifolds also off ebay for £50 and the linkage filter kit from CB performance in the US, as its the best hex linkage for £75 ish. £215 all in :D

I went for 36's for fuel economy and a little more grunt. I'm planning long trips so didnt want a thirsty beast as fuel is rising fast.

Good buy! Has the seller got any more? Did you come across any other similar deals!? Looking for the same I think....

The seller (kerbside autos) hasn't got any 36's or 40's as i emailed him about the same thing Monday or Tuesday, he's not even sure when he'll have any more.
Its getting to the point where i'm once again considering going down the single progressive carb route until i can find some decent FRD's or DRLA's.
I know people slate them but i've been told on another forum that if you can get them set up right there a massive improvement over the standard 34pict3

There are a pair of 34FRD's on Samba (ad renewed 10th Jun) but I cannot get a response from the guy who's listed them.

Got in touch with Dellorto.co.uk and they recommended their Weber ICT34 kit for less than £300 http://www.dellorto.co.uk/merchandise/products_details.asp?PartNo=TYPE%201%20ICT%20kit&CategoryID=12&PartsectionID=48 but then again I guess they wouldn't recommend anyone else's products.

I also looked at this set but its £300 excluding VAT so this makes it £350 (near enough) the same price that everyone else sells this kit for.
Hate to admit this but im considering going for a secondhand progressive until i can find the carbs i want
