Which oil make and type would you recommend for my fairly standard 1.6 engine ?

And where do you buy yours? :)

Andrew

Let the war begin  There`s lots of differing views on this from straight 30 or 40 Morris oil to the multitude of multigrades. Main thing to remember is any oil is better than no oil and change it fairly regularly. VW back in the day recommended straight 30 I believe, the best engineer I know said he thought I ought to use straight 40 because of the likelyhood of longer runs with out stopping nowadays and mostly in the summer which is what I do :D One of the top dudes from Morris oils did a big piece on why straight 30 and every engine builder will have his own opinion. Do a couple of searches on various forums and you`ll see what I mean ;)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, How long before the photo of the can of worms ?? 8)

i always use straight 30 morris oil from the local gsf branch.....costs 13 sheets for 5 ltrs but also 20/50 synthetic is ok too never had any problems with morris so will stick to that

Tis a argument which will run for ever. I'm running 30 but am tempted to use some 10-40 or even 20-50 (I seem to have gallons of this lying about) semi synthetic

Here you go oz...

Thanking you !! It really is a can of worms this subject,, I`m surprised it`s stayed as sedate as it has and nobodys actually gone off on one because their Daddy said " Blah blah blah,,,, blah blah blah "

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, It`s just oil !!! `JUST OIL' ;) ;)

Hiya mate,

like ozzidog said any oil is better than no oil. In an emergency I reckon you could run most engine oils, although i wouldnt test it out on my engine. I work for a rival company of morris, lol, so dont use them, only cos I can get it free at work though. I would personally run a mineral based muti-grade. Either 15w/40 or 20w/50. Although you wont go wrong running mono grade SAE 30 or SAE 40. Probably stay way from semi synth oils.
If your engine has always run mono grade, then why change it if it works and has all ways worked, like wise for multi grade. Seeing as you have some 20w/50 I'd run that. Saves buying anymore.

agree millers is the way forward and a motor that dont piss it all out helps too( as i found out)
we running fully synthetic as we had loadsa probs with previous motors and so threw a bit of money at the problem, seems to be fine if a bit more expensive.

One of the reasons,, some people say to stay away from the synthetic types, is their historical reluctance to dissipate heat, and as air cooleds rely on this ,,,,,,,,,,,,, So everything changes and the synths are supposed to be as good as anything else now days,, ;)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,For an oil thread,,,,,,,,,it`s fairly good natured

P.S. How long before it gets ugly

john the horse said:
ozzie can you run just on stella?

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,I`ll just go and have a word with him,,, he is just over 40 and about time he started   8)
