Hi all! My husband and I can't agree on where to put our new front reg plate - I vote on the bumper, he votes just above on the front panel.

Where do you guys have yours? Where SHOULD they be? Do they need a special mount to go on the bumper as it is curved?

:msn4:

Mine is on the bumper and looks fine there. I wouldn't want to start drilling into a front panel.

As above - mine currently resides in the front window but I have a bracket for the front bumper.

I wouldn't want to use adhesive or screws on the front panel if I could avoid it!

Ours was already on the front panel... so my husband is insistent that it goes back in the same place. If we move it to the bumper as I would prefer, it would leave us with two little holes needing attention in the panel!

What sort of bracket are you using to attach it to the bumper?

If you have holes in the panel for it, then leave it there and make sure the holes dont let rain/water in.

Just FYI, and it might not apply to you, but if you have, or plan to have, a nose-mounted spare wheel, then the plate will be obscured on the front panel so will be better on the front bumper.

As for mounting on the front bumper, the can either be hung from underneath, or fastened across the front of the bumper itself. The issue THERE is that there is obviously no 'flat' to attach it to.

I used a spare number-plate mounting plinth on mine to get it flat. I started with a spare Rover Sterling one I had, and cut the curve at each end into a 'vee' to match the profile of the VW front bumper, then screwed it back to the bumper and put the number plate screws right through the plate and the plinth into the bumper itself...

Ours is above the bumper as per the pic
Not screwed on but secured with the thick adhesive pads

Ours is stuck on the front panel, but is starting to come loose and as the plate is peeling too I have a new one and a bracket to attach it to the bumper.
Reserving judgement until I take the old one off and play about with them!
Cheers
Al

Thanks guys! All very useful info. Dickie524 I don't have a 'nose' so fortunately that is an issue i've managed to avoid!

I think as the previous owner had already put holes in the front panel, I am fighting a losing battle trying to move it to the bumper for now...

I will add it to the endless 'to-do' list!

Out of curiosity, where were they originally mounted when factory fresh??

Stuck to the front for me too:

Get a sign company to make you a magnetic numberplate so it can go in either location

good question, i've just bought new plates and was wondering the same thing. i favour above the bumper so great to see some pics. think i'd better head off to ebay and get some pads to stick it on.

Even though your plates are different here in Canada, I prefer just above the front bumper. The province from where I bought my bus only has plates on the rear of their vehicles, so I had to figure something out since there were no holes in either the bumper or the body ... and magnets or adhesive are a definite no-no here!

I bent and painted these brackets from simple flat steel with a nut welded on so that a bolt would pinch the underside of the top lip of the bumper and not dig into the bumper paint on the top side. The brackets slid in from the side of the bumper with the tightest bend wrapped around the back of the bumper's top lip. I attached the plate on finger tight, adjusted the location of the brackets and tightened everything down. It's on very solid and doesn't touch the body for those of you who have nice paint.

I had mine on the bumper with a bracket but ditched it in favour of a magnetic one fitted in the recess below the front bulge as in the pics. However it has left two annoying holes in the bumper but going to fit some of those white plastic screw caps in to the holes to mask them

Our number plate is on a bracket bolted to the underside of the bumper, so no unsightly holes at all from the front.

mine has previously been on the front bumper (secured with 3m stickyback velcro) however I have now decided to role without a front plate.. I really just like the look better without. Is a police officer gonna do a handbrake turn to pursue a classic bus doing 26mph or even notice??

FTW :rocknroll:

If they can notice illegal letter spacing on modern reg plates theyll notice you missing one entirely.

I'm with you Lemur, I'm not running with a front plate either. Having just had my bumpers filled, straightened and painted I can't bring myself to drill them. I've just bought these magnetic plates to get me through the MOT.

Yup i have not ran one on mine for about 5 years , never been bothered by Mr Plod
