I asked this question in my main thread but had no takers so thought I would create a spin-off thread.

What to do with the boots and CV joint outer as the boots are good but need to remove all the old grease, but how do I separate them without damaging anything?

Hope someone can come up with a good answer :)

pop the CV joint outer in a vice, get yourself a blunt screwdriver and a small hammer and tap the boot ring off. They're only really held on with dirt & oil.

Mess is my middle name :D

Tried to split last night, but I don't have a vice, just a workmate, which didn't work :(
Looks like I will have to buy a good sized vice then.

It should be possible with a workmate.

It only needs a big bladed screwdriver and a sharp rap from a small hammer.

How you hold it does matter, what with doesn't ;)

Oh err misses :)

Will have another go today - been stripping the hubs of the bearings in the mean time (will pop a few pics on my main thread) ready for sand blasting so once these are stripped will look at the boots again.
