Sooooooo like the holy grail of parts, i still cannot see why big companies (read a good bit of cash!) have not made any new ones?

Now i know there is **** loads of work that goes into them, what with castings etc, but surely they would be well worth it as most people would buy a new one at least once in their VW lifetime. Im sure most restos would be straight on the phone for a new one and most have an old one that is luckily okay, for the time being!

So have i missed something? are people are not willing to gamble the cash? is it because we all cant be arsed to get the ball rolling?

What do you think?

It's been tried a few times mate. I've asked an old school engineer and foundry man, but he said the difficulty was the high initial cost of manufacturing the obsolete parts with no surety of getting their investment back.
I did lend a used box to someone on here 2 years ago, but haven't heard anything or had the box returned.

I think there are investment type websites that may assist with a good business case, although this might be seen as a bit small fry I guess....:(

This is my point, i cant understand why JK or Heritage etc cant afford the investment, surely the market is more than there? I may just have to do it myself and risk it

I have a mate who has a small foundry and CNC milling machine, hes been knocking up parts for this and that. When i get the beam off the Devon, I'm replacing it with a red 9 setup so ill take the steering box to him see what he says.

Sounds like a plan 8) im making some enquiries as well. Lets see what we can come up with 8)

we have been and are on it but it isnt a quick process. I am pushing hard on your behalf.

Am I right in thinking most people would be happy in buying a box on an exchange basis?

If anyone has core lying about we may be interested in buying it, left and right hand drive boxes from early and lates.

This is grand news.

An exchange basis would be best all round i feel. As long as they contain new quality parts, not just reshimmed oil filled wobblers ;) and of course price is forever the problem, but im sure people would pay for a good quality replacement as long as it wasnt stupid. 8)

this ^^^^ too many so called recon units floating about that are far from good quality as is many parts these days :)

I'm over in Melbourne Australia now guys. with campers/beetles/ghias and type 3 34 etc all being pretty highly priced (especially with this exchange rate maybe theres a market for me to start stripping some of the parts out of the scrap ones.

i was only thinking today, "what RHD specific parts are in high demand....with exception of RHD sliders!"

On Steering boxes, I would have thought the initial costs could be reduced if only the peg and worm were manufactured rather than a whole box. After all its that bit that wears, the rest can be fixed with new seals and bushes.

Another solution coluld be to fit a late box? (which is a better unit). Though this does need some cutting/welding skills, I wouldn't have thought it was more work than fitting say, beam adjusters for example?

Absolutley but if you have ever had one in bits you will realise they are quite unique how they are manufactured as the bearings are built into the worm and peg output shaft, I would have thought very difficult to reproduce espeacially on a small scale basis.

IMO this would be the better option (and a better box) if someone looked into this and produced a kit to include mounting plates etc
