Roof Hinges

Hi all.

I have a contact that is currently looking at making some stainless steel roof hinges for a front hinge Westy roof , he has taken one of mine to use as a template, I will keep you guys informed on how we get on.

I should have an idea soon of cost and availability. We are also looking into making the pop top fabric protectors as well in stainless steel.

Would there be any interest in something like this if it were to become available?

Hi Simo,

The Fabric protector sits under the hinge and stops the pop top fabric getting caught in the hinge as it closes. Mine has oil marks on the fabric where people in the past have greased the lower runner. I believe this stops any lube comming into contact with the fabric.

Not a very popular accessory and not often seen.[ well I havent seen any fitted to any busses ]

As soon as mine are on I will show you exactly what I mean

Hi, are there any advantages of these hinges over the OG ones?

Are they any stronger, or are they for people who have damaged /missing hinges?

Hi Mike,

The replacment hinges will be made from stainless steel, I am not sure what the original metal is but mainly for people that either have a set missing or would like to replace rusty or worn out hinges.

I for one will be having mine machine polished as its one of the things that I feel let my bus down once the roof is open.

As for strength, I haven't seen any broken hinges but i am sure there someone out there that can prove me wrong

ok thanks, I would like to add a pair of gas lifters to my roof, to make it easier to put up/down. That's why I was asking.

It's one of those jobs that keeps slipping down the list though as more important stuff comes up! :roll: :lol:

What about if the gas struts are fixed ono the rar roof struts?

What I am hoping to do is mount the bottom of the gas strut onto the westie hinge (at the rear end) and the top end to the pop top on a suitably strengthened location. It's just a plan at the moment, there was someone onTLB that had done it to their rear hinged pop top and I thought it looked pretty good as well as making it easier to push up the pop top. I think the main issue is not having the gas strut too powerful so that may damage the pop top but I have seen adjustable struts that can be reduced in force by allowing some of the compressed gas out. In that way it should be possible to get the balance right.

A meet up would be great!

With regards to the hinges we are looking at getting a gas strut fabled into the rear roof stays so not to over pressure the hinges on the front. I wouldn't have to be that wrong as the roof is very light when you compare it against say a tailgate of a modern car.

I will keep you updated.
