my better half is buying me a roof rack for crimbo,i was going for the jk ones but thought id ask if theres any where else i could look?i like the style of the jk ones, but i want the frame white(same white as the roof) so ive got to paint it before i put it togeather anyway,so not bothered what colour it is.i like the idea of chrome but im guessing these are more than £150,

what do you recon?

Chrome will peel, get power coated or stainless, its less hassle in the long run unless your going for the rat look.

cheers Aroan - check out our thread, strongy......if there's nothing "modular" that takes your fancy, give Andy a bell, have a chat and we'll see if we can make you something to suit

They saw my vision straight away for an idea I had in mind... Cant wait to see the finnished article....

What was you vision or are you waiting for it to be made, then the piccies uploaded

1)...3 bow roofrack with rear portion of "fence" omitted. Fitted with mounting bracket / clamp to mount spare wheel upright.

2)...single board bar with extra wide gutter feet and clamps.

3)...horizontal stay bar to tie board bar and roofrack together when using roof box.

4)...roofrack ladder - approx 2m long with hooks to secure to roofrack and rubber feet.

the horizontal stay will be pre-drilled for mounting to the roofrack / board bar

each bow on the roofrack, and the board bar will have a pair of small hangers attached so the ladder can be mounted along the side with bungee cords or ratchet straps (not supplied)

all the above fully powder coated to a standard colour

this is my crap drawing they had to work from

Aaron - will the spare wheel hang over so that it is in-line at the bottom with the roof gutter!!

R's

No that was a slight mishap in my 10 second sketch... (you might have guessed I'm not a graphical designer)
The door will be clear to open plus wanted to put the spare on the roof anyway
the ladder will be ground to roof (the problem with most ladders is they rest on the wheels or panels which I didnt want)
I use the box so much and like it a lot (note the colour not many about) so wanted to continue using it on the bay.
plus can ditch the box and use the board bar for just that (or canoe)

Makes sense (sort of!!).
Take it the ladder will hinge and fold and be stored in the van
Hope you don't think I'm being to nosey, but how many GBP roughly are
we talking - I got the original roofrack for my van when I bought and just recently
started to strip it back, but to be honest, it looks rough and I think I will just
buy another one - but to my design

The racks being built so the ladders can be secured to the side of the rack when not in use so theres nothing but passenger space and light luggage within the van...

Price £360 which I thought was reasonable for a one off affair...

Sounds very good to me :D
Take it the ladders will be locked in place (hate to see the ladders go a walking........ :( )

When I was looking for a rack for my 71 Devon I was hoping that I could get something that would fit over the cab and would also be able to carry the spare wheel like this rack of a 1963 Dormobile. Unfortunately nothing similar was available so I went for a 2 bow westy rack from Creative. I'm sure there's a market for these types of racks. Just a thought.

That looks fantastic - I'm sure there'd be a market for those! ;)

The only obvious difference is that there's no front gutter on a bay but I agree the design is a good 'un.

Hi all,
I am Andy, the main designer and fabricator at design21, the over cab rack is well into design stage just a few niggles to sort out, should be unleashed on the public for summer next year, we are also trying to develop one that goes on the front of bays, but as said the no front gutter problem is the biggest obsticle at the moment, but we have never been defeted, so expect us to come up with something.
