Hi I'm new to both owning an early bay and to the site. I'll get some pictures of sandy up tomorrow night - she's our 68 st tropez bay

we've owned her for about three months now and as well as driving her around the isle of man most weekends we did a two week tour of the south of england

spent ages looking for her - nearly a year, including a chilly hungover trip to dub freeze earlier this year, eventually finding a 68 tintop locally that was too good to say no to. we think she may have been a delux???

we opted to pay a bit more and get a van in a solid state but as soon as i started poking around i found more rust than i'd first thought, she was restored quite well ten years ago and is just showing signs of surface rust all over.

Have just started on the underside taking her back to bare metal as best i can, was wondering if anyone has any tips - i'm doing well but wondering if i've chosen the right paint etc - i've used jenolite to treat any visable rust once the paints all off, then i've used hammerite rust eater and primer alll in one followed by numerous coats of shutz stone chip.

these were the best products i could find living on a small island so hopefully i've made a good choice.

anyway big plans over winter including full respray full interior rebuild and engine out and top end rebuild fitting twin carbs - my first attempt at all this so any advice as i'm going would be really appreciated

i'll get my pics up tomorrow

cheers guys :D

Also can anyone point me in the right direction - i'm trying to look up my van's history - i have paperwork dating it to the 9th jan 68 but want to find out more any ideas???

Have a look behind the nearside seat, hopefully you have two labels one being the vin with the chassis number the other having a load of blocks of numbers this is the M plate much of it can be decoded if you go to the FAQs page there should be a thread with a decoder link. This will give details of how it was ordered from VW exact model and any accessories, some of the details are still missing from the records and are very difficult to assess but most now are available.
