Shortly I will be looking at fitting a remote servo to the westy, I have done a bit of research ad have hit a snag, my van currently runs a 1500 single port, as these engines were never fitted to a car with a servo, there is no servo pipe on the manifold, so I will need to fit one, my question is, what is the best way of doing this?

Any ideas?

just as an aside, because i've seen a few of your technical questions regarding servos, we've got a stock brake set-up, discs at the front, drums at the back, no servo, the heaviest conversion known to man, and when my wife drives it, approx. five foot six and ten stone, she just presses the brake pedal, and the bus stops.

she is an interesting 'control' therefore, because she doesn't read technical manuals, she doesn't go on internet forums, so she doesn't know anything about how the brakes are ineffective, or they're hard to use when they're not servo-assisted, or all the rest of it.

she just presses the brake and it stops, and not once has she ever mentioned them being anything different to what she's used to in a modern car.

steering ? blowing all over the M53 in a breeze of a cross-wind ? yep. nightmare. engine ? struggling up that bloody hill on the A38 in second with the oil temperature off the scale ? yep. nightmare. brakes ? never mentioned them.

i know you're going custom; i'm just offering you a different perspective 8)

Yeah I see where you are coming from, my wife has driven my van once, couldn’t get it in to second gear and vowed never to drive it again, happy days!

I on the other hand have driven it quite a regularly, I also live in the South Wales Valleys, lots of big hills, with horrible drops, the drums I have give me no confidence.

Also I am inherently lazy and the thought of adjusting drum brakes regularly just fills me with dread, I would much rather fit nice servo assisted brakes and be done with it.

Plus it gives me something to research, otherwise I would be sat here looking for porn……..

you know you can't kid a kidder, right ;)

are you telling me that R&Ding and then installing a system whereby you have to make wholesale changes to the suspension both front and back, plus installing a completely different master cylinder, AND a remote servo, not to mention the associated change in PCD and the potential hassle that might entail, is somehow easier than turning a star adjuster a couple of degrees every few thousand miles or so

i'm with you though brother

I know I'm wrong... but I actually find adjusting the brakes on my bug quite therapeutic. 30 minutes of jacking the bug up, hammering the star adjusters round and letting the car down every 2 years doesn't seem like a lot of hassle to me.

If your braking performance isn't up to standard, best to check all the stock components are working properly. I've never been an EB with drums, but I know a guy with a 1914 in a split, stock drums and it stops on a sixpence - probably pulls up quicker than my 'late' early with discs on the front.

:)

Hiya Axl,

You need to find 113 129 710N (WRONG NUMBER - see additional post below). That's a VW intake manifold. Originally this single port manifold appeared VW AutoStick Bugs. It has the 12 mm vacuum port just below the carb base so it's a perfect fit for your brake servo.

Bookwus - you are the man, i was thinking about a 1500 auto, but after searching ETKA i found nothing, now i know exactly what i need, dont you just love forums and VW!

not exactly gonna be growing on trees though, are they ?

*araldite is the way forward*

yeah got a mate checking if they are available new, you never know!

But in the mean time I have bought a nearly new standard Herratage one off ebay for £10 happy days, i'll get a nice 10mm bit of pipe welded on to that, jobs a good one.

Hiya axl,

Hey! I gave you a wrong turn!

I typoed the number when I keyed it in above.

It should be 113 129 701N. I transposed the numbers in the last series by mistake. Sorry about that.

And for what it might be worth, speaking as a person who moderates a forum focused on the AutoStick, I can tell you that the chances of finding a new singleport intake manifold for an AutoStick are roughly the same as finding a screendoor on a submarine. If you should find an NOS AS manifold puhleeze let me know about it. Lots of 'em over here in the States - all used of course.

I have a SP manifold with vac take off 113 129 701 K 3

CIP1 do one at abou $40 I think ....

and theres a few other dealers got them ....

https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-113-129-701-K" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

theres a few german and scandinavian sites with them too....

Hiya axl,

Be careful with the 701 K. The vacuum port, located over on the left arm is a 3.5 diameter port. It was designed to provide the vacuum for the altitude compensator component in the throttle positioner assembly. That port is much too small to be providing the vacuum you'd need for as brake servo. You need to be looking for a manifold with a 12 mm vacuum port.

ok cool

the photo I have seen of one has the vacume port on the pipe leading up to the carb, I have been told that I need a 10mm pipe though.

I have bought a new manifold so i will probably get a pipe welded on now, is there any issues with welding a pipe on then drilling the hole after?

Im also worried that if the welding isnt spot on i could get a vacume leek :(

That aint for no altitude compensator.....

yeah the welding will need to be spot on you dont want any leaks from the manifold

Thats an OG part as stated above perfectly positioned for servo pipe.

reviewing the Cip1 item then looks to be indeed a small bore pipe....
