thinking about fitting a servo onto my 1971rhd bay, i have a rust free lhd beam so i am going to swop the servo bkt the the other end of beam. what else do i need (apart from a servo) and where is best place to source the bits? i have no parts at all as yet so would need everything including a servo. any pic's of set up would be appreciated aswell cheers

Hi,

You will need to source the servo, connecting rod (screws to the servo, attaches to pedal), pipe to the engine bay (cloth covered rubber hose and steel pipe), a manifold that has the take off for the servo and a one way valve.

The only thing i'm not sure about is whether your brake pedal is the same as a standard servo model. You can use the late bay servo and rod and i think heritage have a diagram of the parts, but i'm sure you can get the bits from other places as well.

my 68 has a 72 beam [now narrowed] but has a servo - I'm sure the pedals haven't been changed but wouldn't know for definite.

don't forget you'll need the servo mounting bracket or fabricate one up, the measurement of where it goes is rasonably critical [10mm or so grace from memory]EDIT just seen the LHD beam part

there maybe more than one non return valve too, sure mine has 2.....

it's not straight forward at all and I'd recommend a search on here and thesamba, as it depends if you're running dual cct and with or without discs.

Is there a reason why you wish to upgrade? servo won't improve braking it only lessens the muscular effort

This is on my to do list, I have most of the parts now, I just need to modify my manifold.

what engine are you running is it a single or twin port ? as you will need a manifold with a 11mm pipe for the vacume to the servo.

I'll try and write a more comprehensive how to, But i'm at work at the moment so cant really :p

sorry to jump on this thread but if you are running twin carbs do you need to bridge the vacuum from each carb manifold? :msn4:

there has been a thread on this, I think the general feeling was no, cant remember the reason why though.

I also have a RHD 71 and my bay has a servo which i beleive was / is standard for the year (Mines a Sept 70)

Yes, all the aussie 71s I worked on all had servos, although some of the other 71s we had in didn't have servos for some reason?

The other bit of knowledge I remember is 71 calipers and pads are one year only but can be directly swapped for 72> calipers.

Mines a UK van :?
'71 calipers can be up-dated to 72> calipers but must be bushed to suit (JK do the bushes or a complete kit)

forgot about my own thread  i want to put a servo on just for the reason dubdubz stated, it lessons the effort and i want to fit a towbar and use a small camping trailer so servo will help with braking. ive looked at ooro's van which is a 71 usa import and it has a servo so at least i have something to go by :)
i've cut the servo braket off my beam and welded it on the other end (it was handed so has to be turned thru 180degrees  must be something to do with where servo is sited in relation to brake pedal) also had to cut off steering damper bkt and weld that on other end as damper would foul servo.
i have the 71 year only brakes, running a 1641 with 32/36 webber carb, and a 1303s box (and no you dont need a special kit to fit box whatever the 'experts' say)
when i say small camping trailer i mean a westy one of course
