Hi guys,

Is it possible to remove the shift rod forwards, rather than backwards, to replace the bushes?

It’s a 68 and the rear coupling looks to be small enough to fit down the tube.

Pics for reference.

Thanks

Andy

Apologies, not meaning to hijack this thread. I need to do this on my bus and will be taking the engine and gearbox out in the next couple of days.

How are you supposed to get the whole gear shift rod out (from either end) as in all the diagrams I have seen there is a locking screw in the middle of the rod which I reason is inside the guide tube?

You don't remove the shift rod in one piece. The locking screw is positioned just in front of where the shift rod enters the chassis and shift tube.
Remove the gearstick, undo the locking screw and the front part of the shift comes away out over the beam, and the rear part of the shift rod then can be pulled through the shift tube and out through the engine compartment.
You do need to remove the engine and gearbox to be able to access the rear shift rod.
